Undergraduate Research Symposium:

The 2021 Virtual Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS), is still on display through today, April 30!  Students present their work through prerecorded oral presentations, poster presentations, and creative performances through an online symposium platform. Presenters will have the opportunity to engage with the campus community to discuss their findings through a built-in forum.

To access the 2021 Virtual URS, you will need to create an account through ForagerOne using your Illinois email address:

Naming Competition:

As part of Undergraduate Research Week, the Office of Undergraduate Research is having a naming contest through its Instagram Platform, @ugresearch_ui. University of Illinois students will have the opportunity to submit one name each for its three new characters (A pencil, magnifying glass, and a lightbulb, for example, pictured below). The best names will be announced at the conclusion of the Undergraduate Research Symposium, May 1st!

The three winners will each be awarded a $25 Amazon gift card, along with social media recognition!

Getting Started in Research Workshop (GSIRW) Virtual Edition:

During this workshop, students will be acquainted with the various forms of undergraduate research that take place on campus. They will be guided to develop a plan of action to locate research opportunities on campus. They will also learn how to contact faculty research mentors. Students will leave the workshop with (1) a better understanding of undergraduate research and how it takes place on our campus, (2) increased confidence to contact faculty research mentors, and (3) a list of faculty mentors to contact.

Participation is by advanced registration only; there are limited spots available. Several dates are available; students should only register for one date.

Undergraduate Research Certificate Program:

The Undergraduate Research Certificate provides an added credential to present to employers and graduate schools. The certificate requires you to satisfy specific criteria across your research experience(s) here at Illinois.

Students are encouraged to start the application early in their research journey; the application can be saved and re-opened, allowing students to continue the application where they left off.

Information Session for UK and Ireland Scholarship Opportunities:

Are you interested in pursuing graduate study in the United Kingdom or Ireland? Writers Workshop End-of-Semester Events:

The Writers Workshop has upcoming interactive presentations that may benefit you as you prepare your final course projects and professional materials. You can gain “Proofreading and Editing Strategies” or learn how to “Write Effective Personal Statements” for scholarships, fellowships, and graduate programs.  All events are held via Zoom. Visit its calendar to register in advance and learn about more upcoming events.

Writers Workshop consultants also provide feedback on writing, including course papers, class presentations, personal statements, and job application materials. Students can make an appointment or use its drop-in times. It encourages students to reserve appointments early, since they tend to fill up fast this time of year, and it will also have extra writing consultants staffing its drop-in hours during finals (no appointment necessary!).

For the 21-22 academic year, the Department of English is looking to hire three Social Media Management Interns: one Creative Writing major and two from any major in the English Department. In response to COVID safety precautions, this position is eligible for remote work. The deadline to apply is 9am on Monday, April 26!

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop creative thematic post series for Facebook and Instagram
  • Promote, attend, and create social media posts about department events when safety allows
  • Design flyers, memes, and other posts for informing and entertaining students
  • Develop creative semester-long multimodal projects
  • Attend weekly meetings for brainstorming, task assignments, and collaboration
  • Edit videos and design flyers or posts
  • Conduct and publish interviews with faculty, alumni, students, and visiting speakers
  • Collaborate with Advising Office in creating content for the Advising Blog

Average hours worked per week: 5 (about 75 hours over a semester)
Position Wage: $11/hour
Position Starts: August 23

Illinois in Washington:

This year, the deadline for Illinois in Washington (IIW) Fall 2021 participation is April 30. More information about the Illinois in Washington Program appears here:  https://washington.illinois.edu/.  To apply, you need to submit:

  • A resume, which must have been reviewed by a career center on campus,
  • A 3-5 page writing sample, double-spaced,
  • Two recommendations, at least one of which is from an academic recommender (instructor, professor, TA), and
  • DARS report or unofficial transcript.

Undergraduate Research Week & Symposium:

URW and URS Program

This year URW events are a combination of asynchronous and live (virtual) presentations hosted by individual departments, units, and programs, and runs from April 25 through May 1.

URS presentations will be on display through our ForagerOne Symposium platform from Monday, April 26, through Friday, April 30. All URS presentations – oral, poster, and exhibit/performance – are pre-recorded and you will have the opportunity to ask questions through the comment section attached to each presentation. Two-credit Course Available This Fall:

If you are a humanities major and are in your junior or senior year, you can register for HUM 275, a two-credit, 16 week, course this Fall.

Summer French Language [LOTE]:

French language courses are available this summer.  These courses are primarily asynchronous with two meetings per week to work on oral proficiency.  There are multiple meeting slots available to accommodate schedules. ESC is holding an Admitted Student Night on Tuesday, April 20th at 7-8 pm (our normal meeting time). Help us welcome admitted English/CW students to English at Illinois!

We want to provide an immersive experience for incoming freshmen/transfer students despite the limitations of the Covid-19 pandemic. Summer Internship Opportunity at the Career Center:

Description:

The Career Center (TCC) is seeking two (2) energetic and customer oriented undergraduate summer interns. The internship focuses on working alongside TCC staff in designing and creating best outreach methods for current students, incoming students, and parents. The interns will have the ability to work on both small and large projects as well as receive ongoing personalized, professional development help from TCC staff. These positions require strong organizational skills and the ability to work in an environment that can be collaborative, as well as independent at times.

Type of Position:

Summer Internship: May 17 – August 6, 2021

Approximately 15 hours weekly, Monday – Friday during regular business hours. Precise schedule of these hours arranged upon hire.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Teamwork & Collaboration

  • Interns will work in partnership to complete tasks assigned by The Career Center staff

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

  • Design and develop innovative methods to reach students
  • Assist students by providing one-on-one resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile reviews, virtually and face to face
  • Assist students by providing drop-in advising on career-related topics such as major exploration and job/internship searches

Work Ethic

  • Present The Career Center’s services and resources to incoming students and parents
  • Meet regularly with supervising Assistant Director of Academic & Campus Outreach

Written & Oral Communication

  • Provide customer service to visitors of The Career Center as the primary point of contact through telephone, email, and face to face interactions
  • Facilitate presentations focusing on various career development topics, as requested by the campus community

  • Utilization of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Illinois Media Space, Learn@Illinois Moodle, as well as Google web-based software

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate student
  • Must be able to dedicate 15 hours per week during regular business hours Monday-Friday, with the possibility of occasional weekend commitments
  • Must be in good academic standing and uphold university student code of conduct
  • Must be able to work a mixed schedule of remote and in-person, in accordance with The Career Center service delivery at the time
  • This position may be funded through federal work-study program, which is a type of financial aid. The successful candidate is expected to complete a 2021-2022 FAFSA application, if eligible, which may be accessed at fafsa.ed.gov to determine eligibility for the federal work study program.

Compensation:

$11.00 hourly

Art-Science Festival @ Illinois: The Illuminated Universe:

Coming up on the weekend of April 23 – 25: the Art-Science Festival @ Illinois: The Illuminated Universe . Faculty member Amy Hassinger will join musician Joy Yang in a collaborative literary / musical presentation called “To See Clearly,” which combines spoken and sung excerpts from Amy’s essay of the same name with Joy’s lovely and haunting piano and theremin accompaniment–improvised music growing out of the essay and of Johnny Nash’s famous song “I Can See Clearly Now.” You are invited to attend the event.

“To See Clearly” will air on Friday night, April 23, at 6 p.m. central—you can find it under the Cosmic Flights theme on the website. But you might want to also check out all the other amazing contributions over the course of the weekend, including a presentation by physicist and jazz saxophonist Stephon Alexander, author of The Jazz of Physics, music by the Jupiter String Quartet, and the premiere of “Solaria: A science-based fantasy on the spirit of the solar system,” by Smitha Vishveshwara, Stephen A. Taylor, Rebecca Witfong, and Nic Morse.
