Undergraduate Research Symposium:

The 2021 Virtual Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS), is still on display through today, April 30!  Students present their work through prerecorded oral presentations, poster presentations, and creative performances through an online symposium platform. Presenters will have the opportunity to engage with the campus community to discuss their findings through a built-in forum.

To access the 2021 Virtual URS, you will need to create an account through ForagerOne using your Illinois email address:

  1. Go to https://go.illinois.edu/URS2021 and press “Sign up”.
  2. After you sign up, you can open the symposium using the following link: https://go.illinois.edu/URS2021
Naming Competition:

As part of Undergraduate Research Week, the Office of Undergraduate Research is having a naming contest through its Instagram Platform, @ugresearch_ui. University of Illinois students will have the opportunity to submit one name each for its three new characters (A pencil, magnifying glass, and a lightbulb, for example, pictured below). The best names will be announced at the conclusion of the Undergraduate Research Symposium, May 1st!

The three winners will each be awarded a $25 Amazon gift card, along with social media recognition!

Getting Started in Research Workshop (GSIRW) Virtual Edition:

During this workshop, students will be acquainted with the various forms of undergraduate research that take place on campus. They will be guided to develop a plan of action to locate research opportunities on campus. They will also learn how to contact faculty research mentors. Students will leave the workshop with (1) a better understanding of undergraduate research and how it takes place on our campus, (2) increased confidence to contact faculty research mentors, and (3) a list of faculty mentors to contact.

Participation is by advanced registration only; there are limited spots available. Several dates are available; students should only register for one date.

Undergraduate Research Certificate Program:

The Undergraduate Research Certificate provides an added credential to present to employers and graduate schools. The certificate requires you to satisfy specific criteria across your research experience(s) here at Illinois.

Students are encouraged to start the application early in their research journey; the application can be saved and re-opened, allowing students to continue the application where they left off.

Information Session for UK and Ireland Scholarship Opportunities:

Are you interested in pursuing graduate study in the United Kingdom or Ireland? If yes, consider applying for a Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell or Gates scholarship!  National & International Scholarships Program at the UIUC will be hosting an information session that will provide insight about these opportunities from past recipients.

The priority deadline for the Marshall scholarship is June 1, 2021, and the required campus deadline for many of the UK/Ireland scholarships is August 23, 2021.

Writers Workshop End-of-Semester Events:

The Writers Workshop has upcoming interactive presentations that may benefit you as you prepare your final course projects and professional materials. You can gain “Proofreading and Editing Strategies” or learn how to “Write Effective Personal Statements” for scholarships, fellowships, and graduate programs.  All events are held via Zoom. Visit its calendar to register in advance and learn about more upcoming events.

Writers Workshop consultants also provide feedback on writing, including course papers, class presentations, personal statements, and job application materials. Students can make an appointment or use its drop-in times. It encourages students to reserve appointments early, since they tend to fill up fast this time of year, and it will also have extra writing consultants staffing its drop-in hours during finals (no appointment necessary!).
