Every year, the English department give out numerous scholarships that recognize and reward English majors, including English, Creative Writing, and Teaching of English. (Several of our scholarships are specifically for future teachers of English). Scholarship amounts vary, but most of them range from $300 to $3000, with a few scholarships giving nearly full tuition for a semester or year.

LAS International Programs

• The application deadline for most Summer 2023, Fall 2023, and Academic Year 2023-2024 study abroad programs is February 15 at 11:59 p.m. If you have any questions, contact International Programs, Student Academic Affairs Office, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. You are required to meet with an LAS International Programs Advisor before you may submit an application. • The program will have an early decision application deadline of June 15, 2023 for Spring 2024 study abroad programs. You are encouraged to apply by the early decision deadline!
• LAS International Programs Student Interns will be hosting a new series of general information sessions about study abroad two times per month. You can find the dates, times, and locations of these events on the event calendar.

Library Workshops, events, and services

With the start of the new semester, the University Library has been busy planning and scheduling workshops, consultation services, programs, and other helpful things for students. For information about the events and workshops visit events calendar as well as  Savvy Researcher workshops.

Research Consultations
Research consultations start again this Sunday! Students can receive help with their research papers, ranging from brainstorming a topic to synthesizing their sources.  Consultations are from 4-9pm, Sunday-Thursday, and are geared towards first- and second-year students.

Speaking Center
The Speaking Center opens again this week! Students can sign up for a consultation to work one-on-one with a trained Speaking Consultant to improve presentations and speeches, attend workshops focused on building lasting speaking skills, or participate in language sessions to build foreign language skills. Upcoming workshops include “Coping with Speech Anxiety” and “Nonverbal Communication for Presentations.“

Academic Success Series and Student Success Workshops
The Academic Success Series is in collaboration with the Counseling Center, and covers topics like “Healthy Relationships,” “Imposter Syndrome,” and more. Student Success Workshops will include some repeats from the fall, like “Study Skills for Neurodiverse Students,” and “Budgeting 101,” and also introduce new workshops, like “Using and Creating a LinkedIn Profile.”

Inclusive Speaker Series: Salvatore De Sando
Funded by the Library Innovation and Seed Grant, this series highlights members of the UIUC community who have done important work highlighting underrepresented voices. Salvatore will be the first in this speaker series, and will present on Feb. 14^th at noon, via zoom.

Family Study Room
For students who are parents or caregivers, there is a space for them in the Main Library! Students can bring their kids with them to the Library, and can also check out Family Kits, a playpen, or children tablets for their children to play with while they study.

Introduction to Library Resources for Literary Studies

Are you new to UIUC? Do you need some help figuring out how to do research? Do you find it difficult to access library resources that can help you to succeed in courses? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, please consider attending “Introduction to Library Resources for Literary Studies.” This one-hour session will teach you to use a variety of library services and features (e.g. Inter-library loan, requesting books, accessing articles, and scheduling a research consultation). Summer Student Employment Opportunity – DGS Peer Advisor

Summer 2023! Peer Advisors are an integral part of New Student Registration and will work closely with DGS advisors, staff, and campus partners to facilitate group meetings, presentations, and course registration for approximately 1,100 new students.

Qualifications include being a current Illinois student in good academic standing, being willing to work as a part of a team, excellent presentation skills, and knowledge of the course explorer website.

USM Graduate English Programs

The Department of English at the University of Southern Mississippi invite you to apply to their graduate programs in English. They offer both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, with emphasis in literature or creative writing. They offer competitive assistantships of up to $17,000 for Ph.D. students (normally renewable for four years in creative writing and five years or more in literature) and $13,000 for M.A. students (normally renewable for two years in both literature and creative writing). The department is also home to Mississippi Review and Southern Quarterly, two leading journals on which students regularly collaborate, the de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection, one of North America’s leading research centers in the field of children’s literature, and the nationally renowned Center for Writers. Underrepresented, minority, and nontraditional applicants are encouraged to apply. 

The priority deadline for Fall 2023 admission is February 10, 2023, though applications after that will still be considered. The Career Center is hosting a free panel event for students in partnership with Research Park, two weeks from today!  On Friday, February 10^th from 12-1 pm in Illini Union room 210, we will have a discussion with a variety of Research Park employer representatives on how to land an internship and make the most of the opportunities there, with a particular focus on opportunities available for students in non-STEM majors and programs.  Our panel will include representatives from AGCO and Abbvie, with others likely added as well.

Research Park internships are not just for engineering students! Hear from a panel of current Illinois students who work within the Research Park in areas like HR, communications, engagement, and operations. Learn about the projects they are working on, the benefits of Research Park internships, and how you can find an on-campus opportunity to work for a tech company. Food will be served.

2023 Community-Academic Scholars

The Community-Academic Scholars Initiative matches undergraduates with an academic mentor and a community partner to collaborate over the summer on a project designed to directly benefit community members served by the partner organization. We are pleased to announce that the Summer 2023 student application period is now open. The deadline to apply is Feb. 6 at 11:59 p.m.

This year’s program includes 15 powerful projects submitted by academic mentors across the University of Illinois and their community collaborators. Projects address a range of topics, including teen substance use, household stability, food security, technology and aging, youth psychosocial development, physical health among people with disabilities, assistive robots, educational equity, maternal health, and cultural humility. 

In addition to developing applied research experience, scholars meet weekly to connect with each other, seek guidance from program leaders, and hear from invited speakers. Scholars also receive a $4000 stipend to offset the cost of housing and/or living expenses during the program.

If you are interested in applying to be a Community-Academic Scholar, be sure to:

1. Review eligibility and program requirements on the website. 
2. Read the project descriptions and the scholar’s role within each project to find projects that most appeal to you and best match your strengths and background.

The Illinois Leadership Center will be hosting our Imprint i-Program on Saturday, February 25^th from 10 am to 4 pm. The Imprint program focuses on competencies necessary for displaying leadership during times of personal and professional transition. Students develop skills in managing themselves during times of change; and learn how to develop, and maintain, the personal and professional networks necessary to sustain success in any environment. APPLY FOR CLA’S CAROLL MILLS YOUNG STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP:

The CLA Caroll Mills Young Study Abroad Scholarship is designed to support students at member institutions who want to participate in a study abroad program.  The scholarship is open to any student who meets eligibility requirements and is presently attending a CLA college or university.  A CLA college or university is one where a member of the College Language Association is presently employed or is a retiree. 

Each application must be verified and signed by a faculty sponsor who is a current financial member of the College Language Association.  Complete applications must be RECEIVED by 5 p.m. EST on Friday, February 10, 2023 for study abroad in summer or fall 2023.

The Writing Across Engineering and Science (WAES) research group is looking for an undergraduate research assistant (https://publish.illinois.edu/waes/). We support engineering and science faculty and graduate students as they learn, incorporate, and adapt practices from writing studies research in ways that enrich both their technical learning objectives and their students’ communication skills. We also research the effectiveness of this support.

We are looking for reliable, curious students interested in learning about writing in STEM settings and qualitative research, particularly interview methods. Students of any major related to science, engineering, writing, or communication are encouraged to apply to join our interdisciplinary team. Initial responsibilities will include activities such as transcribing and analyzing interview data, writing research memos, observing interviews, and participating in project team meetings.

Required qualifications:
• Interest in writing instruction in STEM settings
• Available during both spring (minimum of 8 hours per week) and summer 2023 (minimum 20 hours per week for 10-12 weeks)

Preferred qualifications:
• Coursework related to writing and communication in STEM
• Prior qualitative research experience, particularly with transcription

Compensation: $13/hour

The Illinois Leadership Center will be hosting our Imprint i-Program on Saturday, February 25^th from 10 am to 4 pm. The Imprint program focuses on competencies necessary for displaying leadership during times of personal and professional transition. Are you ready to gain real-world experience and advance your writing? College Magazine‘s professional writing program is a 4-month commitment that includes a 7-week intensive training where you’ll uncover your voice, interview dream sources and write meaningful articles that readers love. Writers who succeed in the first 4 months often continue into our editorial internship program. Working closely with our editors, writers receive one-on-one feedback. Writers also learn social media, WordPress HTML, and the SEO knowledge necessary for the real world of magazine journalism.

The writer position is 10 hours a week on a flexible schedule. It’s a volunteer, intensive and challenging writing experience. New York University’s College of Arts and Science invites visiting undergraduate students to participate in their short-term summer programs. The month-long creative writing retreats in Florence and Paris may be of particular interest to students. The Writers in Florence and Writers in Paris programs are only offered during the summer, and students are encouraged to immerse themselves in their host city through both reading and writing assignments. Participants focus on one of three genres—poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction—and attend daily writing workshops and craft seminars. 2023 faculty will include Catherine Barnett, Raven Leilani, Jonathan Safran Foer, Katie Kitamura, Ken Chen, Mark Bibbins, and Matthew Rohrer, among many other acclaimed writers. All coursework receives a NYU transcript, transferable to other institutions.

We’re looking for original poems, stories, essays, and artwork that showcases what happens when we avoid the avoidable.

Qualifications For Submission:

Submission Deadline: January 8^th, 2023 at 11:59 pm EST 

PULJ is seeking articles ranging from 20 to 100+ double-spaced pages in length. The journal is especially receptive to research articles, senior theses, independent studies, and final essays written for courses. Articles need not be written on United States law—they can be written on the laws or legal system of any nation. The journal considers submissions on a rolling basis, so if your piece is not finished by the noted deadline, please still submit it for consideration in the subsequent issue.

Students in any field of study are encouraged to submit their work, so long as their pieces relate to law or legal systems. Possible disciplinary perspectives include, but are not limited to, history, criminology, economics, sociology, anthropology, English, biology, neuroscience, philosophy, linguistics, psychology, and political science.

FLAS Fellowships for English Majors:

Do you study a less commonly taught language (any language except French, German, and Spanish)? Are you a U.S. citizen or permanent resident? If so, consider applying for a Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship for summer 2023 or academic year 2023-24. FLAS fellowships support both undergraduate and graduate study in modern foreign languages in combination with global or area studies. The purpose of the FLAS program is to train students to integrate global knowledge into a future career in areas of national need like cyber security and business, where knowledge of additional languages is crucial. • Interested in arts as activism? Consider how literature, music, visual arts, poetry and storytelling, dance, philosophy and critical social theories have shaped movements for social justice across the globe at the University of Bristol.
• Interested in technology and innovation? Explore Scotland’s creative and technological industries through study at the University of Strathclyde and the Glasgow School of Art.
• Interested in Northern Ireland’s historical, cultural, and political, environment? Engage with local people and visit a range of cultural sites with the Queen’s University Belfast program.

The Summer Institutes cover the majority of the participant costs (round-trip airfare from the US to the UK, tuition and fees at the university, room and board, and social programs).  Students must be US citizen freshmen or sophomores with a GPA of 3.7 or above.

The National and International Scholarship Program will be hosting an information session for students to learn about the Fulbright UK Summer Institutes. Medieval Studies End-of-term Reception

• GSD 411 (CRN 74830) – Interactive Fiction with Twine (Spring Full Term, Online), which teaches students the most prominent Interactive Fiction and narrative prototyping tool in the game industry – taught by Chris Klimas himself! (the creator of Twine)
• GSD 390, Section WGA (CRN 74996) –  Literary Hypertext 1: History (Spring part A), which explores the history of interactive narrative in its various forms, starting with paper

FLAS Fellowship for Students:

If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who studies or is interested in studying a less commonly taught language (any language except French, German, and Spanish), consider applying for a Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship for Summer 2023 and/or Academic Year 2023-24! This is a prestigious fellowship that supports the study of modern foreign languages in combination with area/global studies. Scheduled for Thursday April 27, 2023, the URS is a daylong event organized and hosted by OUR where students can present poster, oral, and creative presentations. The URS will be held in the Illini Union.

The Penn Undergraduate Law Journal (PULJ) is soliciting submissions for its twentieth issue. Please see below for details:

Qualifications For Submission:

Submission Deadline: January 8^th, 2023 at 11:59 pm EST 

PULJ is seeking articles ranging from 20 to 100+ double-spaced pages in length. The journal is especially receptive to research articles, senior theses, independent studies, and final essays written for courses. Articles need not be written on United States law—they can be written on the laws or legal system of any nation. The journal considers submissions on a rolling basis, so if your piece is not finished by the noted deadline, please still submit it for consideration in the subsequent issue.

Students in any field of study are encouraged to submit their work, so long as their pieces relate to law or legal systems. Possible disciplinary perspectives include, but are not limited to, history, criminology, economics, sociology, anthropology, English, biology, neuroscience, philosophy, linguistics, psychology, and political science.

Collision Call for Submission:

Collision, an annual undergraduate publication at the University of Pittsburgh, is currently open for submissions of undergraduate fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art. By submitting to the magazine, you will be considered for its writing and cover art contests. Submissions for the annual magazine close Friday, February 24, but submissions are read on a rolling basis. registration guidelines redux (with honors info)

Students are assigned a time on or after October 31 according to the schedule found here. When you are ready to schedule an advising appointment (required for new students and students on academic probation, recommended for all others) call 217-333-4346 during the hours 8:30-noon or 1:00-4:30. As always, you may request a particular advisor or ask for the first person available.

If you would like to sign up for an honors course, please email Nancy at nrahn@illinois.edu (include your full name and UIN) and tell her which seminar you hope to take this spring, including the title/topic and the CRN.  See ENGL 396 entries in Course Explorer for the information you’ll need to include.  Please allow one week to get a response. Once Nancy has given you permission to take the course, you must still go into the registration system and add it to your schedule. It’s first come, first served, so act now! If you want to take two seminars, then you may, but you must receive approval for the first before you can request a second. 

Eligibility rests on the following: a GPA of at least 3.33 in the major and overall, and completion of at least three ENGL courses, of which one must be ENGL 200 and another must be ENGL 301 or 350.  Most students begin honors coursework in their junior year, but eligible sophomores may sign up if they meet the basic requirements.

Here are some things you can do ahead of time to make your registration appointment more productive: 

• Run your degree audit and see what you can make of it. Even if you find it a little confusing, try to get a sense of what requirements you have left to fulfill, and then when we do your registration appointment we can confirm (or correct) your interpretation of the audit and help explain anything that’s confusing. 
• Think about what you want to accomplish in the spring. What major/minor/Gen Ed requirements would you like to complete, and what other areas would you like to explore?   
• If you are thinking of adding a major or a minor, do you know what you need to do to get started? If you’ve already begun, can you figure out the next step?  You can explore major and minor requirements listed here: http://catalog.illinois.edu/undergraduate/
• Consult Course Explorer and be sure to read the course descriptions in full.  Remember that if a course is called “Topics in X” then you must click through to see the individual sections and find out what topics are available. It’s also worth clicking through on any 199 (usually called Undergraduate Open Seminar) because there you may find some interesting and unusual topics being piloted, and they’re usually unrestricted.

udall scholarship:

The University of Illinois seeks to nominate sophomores and juniors for the Udall Scholarship. Udall awards $7,000 to sophomores or juniors in any field of study who are taking action to address environmental concerns and are committed to a career related to the environment. There are also special awards also for Native American students interested in Tribal policy or health care (no need for these interests to be related to the environment). Students must be US citizens, US nationals, or US permanent residents. A successful applicant will have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate leadership and a commitment to service. The campus deadline is January 30, 2023 to be considered.

All Undergraduate Students Welcome to Apply to 2023 NYU Creative Writing Summer Intensives:

New York University’s College of Arts and Science invites visiting undergraduate students to participate in their short-term summer programs. The month-long creative writing retreats in Florence and Paris may be of particular interest to students. The Writers in Florence and Writers in Paris programs are only offered during the summer, and students are encouraged to immerse themselves in their host city through both reading and writing assignments. Participants focus on one of three genres—poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction—and attend daily writing workshops and craft seminars. 2023 faculty will include Catherine Barnett, Raven Leilani, Jonathan Safran Foer, Katie Kitamura, Ken Chen, Mark Bibbins, and Matthew Rohrer, among many other acclaimed writers. All coursework receives a NYU transcript, transferable to other institutions.

Apply for CLA’s Caroll Mills Young Study Abroad Scholarship:

The CLA Caroll Mills Young Study Abroad Scholarship is designed to support students at member institutions who want to participate in a study abroad program.  The scholarship is open to any student who meets eligibility requirements and is presently attending a CLA college or university.  A CLA college or university is one where a member of the College Language Association is presently employed or is a retiree. 

Each application must be verified and signed by a faculty sponsor who is a current financial member of the College Language Association.  Complete applications must be RECEIVED by 5 p.m. EST on Friday, February 10, 2023 for study abroad in summer or fall 2023.

Opening of the Speaking Center:

The University Library is excited to announce the opening of the Speaking Center this fall! Beginning October 18th, students will be able to receive free and personalized public speaking assistance for any presentation and at any stage in the preparation process.

Students can work one-on-one with a trained Speaking Consultant to improve presentations and speeches, attend workshops focused on building lasting speaking skills, or participate in language sessions to build foreign language skills.
