Website of the Week

This week’s website is my good friend Lauren’s post about her trip to the Open Video Conference in New York City. Lauren’s not a librarian, but as someone who works with digital media, she has similar interests, and so sums up rather well why LIS professionals should be interested in open video: “Video currently lags way behind text and other less-rich media on the web in terms of openness, interoperability, findability, and indexing…”

The post talks about the new features of Firefox 3.5, the new HTML 5 standard, open video codecs, and Free and Open Source video editing programs. Some of this sounds fairly technical, but I think she does a good job of breaking down a lot of it into simpler terms and making it clear why these things matter. And for those who want more advanced material, there are links to demo videos and other articles.
