Bridge Bearing Report Published

Research Report No. FHWA-ICT-13-002 Experimental Investigation of the Seismic Response of Bridge Bearings is now published and available online.  The report, which is authored by J. LaFave, L. Fahnestock, D. Foutch, J. Steelman, J. Revell, E. Filipov and J. Hajjar, describes an extensive full-scale bearing testing program that was conducted as part of the project Calibration and Refinement of Illinois’ Earthquake Resisting System Bridge Design Methodology.

In addition, a subset of this bearing testing program is reported in the July 2013 issue of the ASCE Journal of Bridge Engineering:

  • Steelman, J.S., Fahnestock, L.A., Filipov, E.T., LaFave, J.M., Hajjar, J.F. and Foutch, D.A. “Shear and Friction Response of Non-Seismic Laminated Elastomeric Bridge Bearings Subject to Seismic Demands,” Journal of Bridge Engineering, ASCE, 18 (7): 612-623, (2013). dx.doi.org/doi:10.1061/(ASCE)BE.1943-5592.0000406

New Papers on Bridge Quasi-Isolation

Two paper were recently published on seismic behavior and performance of quasi-isolated bridges:

  • Filipov, E.T., Fahnestock, L.A., Steelman, J.S., LaFave, J.M., Hajjar, J.F. and Foutch, D.A. “Evaluation of Quasi-Isolated Seismic Bridge Behavior using Nonlinear Bearing Models,” Engineering Structures, 49 (2013) 168-181. dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.engstruct.2012.10.011
  • Filipov, E.T., Revell, J.R., Fahnestock, L.A., LaFave, J.M., Hajjar, J.F., Foutch, D.A. and Steelman, J.S. “Seismic Performance of Highway Bridges with Fusing Bearing Components for Quasi-Isolation,” Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics, 42 (9): 1375-1394, (2013). dx.doi.org/10.1002/eqe.2277

The work described in these papers is part of the project Calibration and Refinement of Illinois’ Earthquake Resisting System Bridge Design Methodology, which is sponsored by the Illinois Center for Transportation.
