Attending Live Sessions

Joining a Live Session for your class in Zoom

Coffee shops, cybercafes, or public places are not recommended to attend a class. If you are in a public space, make sure you find a quiet place to hear and be heard when you have to participate. Manage your environment to have a good experience and avoid distractions.

  • Make sure your wifi or wired connections are reliable and stable. Test your connection speed at https://www.speedtest.net/.
  • Find a quiet, well-lit room with little to no background noise and no bright lights or windows behind you.
  • Open the links you receive from your professor, and test the system well before class time.
  • Have a headset or headphones
  • Be ready to use your camera if the instructor requires it
  • Set up your audio and video  tools.
  • Remember to mute your audio when you’re not speaking to avoid external noises in the class.

Conduct yourself professionally.  Whether you’re online or face to face, you are expected to show respect for others and act as if you are in a physical classroom environment.

Your course site and completing assignments on time

Your assignments may be in Compass 2G (Blackboard Learn) and in different additional applications such as textbook publisher’s sites, survey sites, or others.  Your instructor will communicate the applications which applications will be used through the syllabus or by email. Read the communication carefully so you can identify the applications that you need. For starters, check the following:

  1. Basic navigation of a course in  Compass 2G  and what a sample course will look like.

Visit http://compass2g.illinois.edu and access the site with your NETID. If you were not able to do so, find HELP on the site and ask for assistance. The sooner you visit and test your access, the better for your success as an online learner.
