Sexual Violence: The Lack of Campus Prevention: Proposal

Dear Ishani,

Out of all the writing assignments that I completed in Rhet 105, I was most passionate about this particular one. As a psychology student, I want to pursue a career in therapy and counseling. I have talked to mom and dad about how I want to help individuals with substance abuse problems, but as I have explored all my career options, my original plan has slightly wavered. Instead, I want to be a counselor for sexual abuse victims. I hope to accomplish this on a more global scale by traveling across the world to help developing countries. I haven’t actually told anybody that I want to follow this path, so I guess you’re the first one to find out (shhh don’t tell mom and dad yet). I wanted to explore this topic more through this research paper. As a college student, I am exposed to countless stories about girls that have been inappropriately touched at parties. The party culture is so big here that I wondered how UIUC, and other schools, could effectively prevent, or reduce, the amount of rape victims. As I continued to research, I found some disturbing facts that fueled my desire to pursue a career as a sexual abuse counselor even more. Although this is not my actual paper, it give some insight into the direction I wanted to go with the paper. The sources provide a brief overview of the information I gathered during the 30 day period I researched for this paper.
