Plagiarism at Its Finest

After examining the originality report, I learned that SafeAssign is a great tool at determining acts of plagiarism in writing. In terms of direct “copy and paste” circumstances, the tool was able to find them with ease. However, outside of these circumstances, I believe there are some flaws in the program. There were a few instances in which “the checker” highlighted material that was not direct plagiarism. For example, the sources I listed in my works cited were flagged as plagiarism. Although, I may not have used a few of these sources in my writing, the program still indicated that it was the material of another individual. Another instance in my essay in which the tool seemed to have missed forms of plagiarism was in some of my paraphrasing. In accordance with rubric guidelines, I chose to paraphrase an argument completely wrong and site it as the author’s words. SafeAssign was unable to characterize my paraphrase as plagiarism. To me, this brings up concerns because a student can write a paper on an article or source and completely make up the content contained within it. If the instructor has no knowledge of the source then they ultimately will not penalize the student. Overall, I feel that the plagiarism checker is a great tool in preventing students from using already written essays or using the “copy and paste” approach.
