Research Question

As a requirement my Rhetoric class the teacher has requested for me to conduct a research paper. The research paper consists of a topic that will not be boring to me nor to my audience. The topic is of my choice and has to be approved by the teacher. As of now I feel like I want to write a paper on gun control. Gun control is a big topic talked upon and especially within the city that I am from. Chicago is one of the city’s with the highest homicide rates and it is all because of the easy access to weapons. The reason for why this topic catches my attention so much is because I hate the fact that things are getting so bad that there are young people being targeted now. There is no respect in that city and when I speak about respect I am referring to ones life. Triggers are being pulled from left to right and not enough is being done to stop it. Lastly, there are many things that are being done to try to solve the problem, but none of them seem to show an effect in a positive way.

In relation to my thoughts above, I would like to mention that I am strongly accepting the challenge of doing my research based on violence and gun control laws. From certain readings I have learned that writing is a process and that it is a process where tons of changes occur whether it is positive or negative. One starts off writing a research paper with the basic idea of what a topic is about; however, once one does research and takes in new info, there is a possible chance that at the end of the paper he will have a new opinion on the topic. Therefore, in result one’s bias view point will change either by making their opinion stronger or maybe even go against their own opinion.

As of now my thesis is that gun violence prevention tactics are referred to as effective; however, homicide rates continue to rise. Now, you may ask yourself why it is that I am so interested in working with this topic. The truth is that I hate how back home in Chicago one cannot roam the streets without having to fear of having their life taken by a criminal. With that being said, my reason of interest is because I want a stop to increasing homicide rates and gun violence. In accordance to my research, I plan on gathering most of it from the UIUC databases and other sources if possible. Also, I plan on working with both primary and secondary sources on the topic that are reliable.
