Pathways of Support

In a big university system, it’s hard for students, faculty and staff to know where to go or who to turn to when they need advice, help with a problem, or to voice a concern. There are many avenues you can take to get support in everything from having trouble balancing your academic workload to addressing microaggressions in classroom or production spaces.

This information is not a policy. It is a roadmap for everyone in the theater community to find someone to talk to – the right someone for each situation. It includes pathways into the overall university community to help everyone better connect to campus resources as well as a transparent outline of departmental responsibilities and roles in addressing concerns. Whether you are a student looking for support outside of the department or a faculty or staff member advising someone in a difficult situation these pathways can help you connect to the resources you need and achieve the outcomes you are seeking.

How to Navigate the Pathways

Problems or concerns come in many different forms – sometimes you just want to consult with someone, to let someone else know about a situation without taking any action or ask for some ideas about how you might approach a problem.  Other times, you need help in resolving a situation or you may be in a situation where immediate intervention is necessary for your own safety and security. As you look at the resources in this guide and determine your pathway to support consider these things:

  • What kind of outcome do you want?
  • What kind of help or support do you need?
  • Who may have the capacity to offer that help or support?
  • How can these systems support your ability to find a resolution?

This guide is a roadmap through our theater community and an on-ramp to services and offices of the university.

No matter what your concern, you do not have to face it alone.

This is a specific list of some of the most relevant university and university-affiliated resources available beyond our department.

A NOTE ON MANDATORY REPORTING

Situations that are covered by Title IX, mandatory reporting regulations or fall under other Illinois codes of conduct and other directives will be reported to the appropriate office even if they are made anonymously. Faculty and staff are required to report all incidents of threats to harm self or others, sexual misconduct, suspected abuse of minors, or violations of state law.
