Stellar Evolution

Creators: Danielle Markovich & Rachael Christina Amaro

Medium: Acrylic & Oil

Description: In the words of Carl Sagan, “We are made of star stuff.” This piece shows a unique blend of stellar and human evolution. Beginning with the initial stages of life, the nebula/baby in the middle is the starting point for 2 very different lives – a massive one that burns fast and dies violently versus a smaller one that burns cooler and ends quietly. Each smaller canvas corresponds to a real world counterpart to one of the stages a star is capable of reaching within its lifetime.

Rachael’s research interests are stellar astrophysics and time domain astronomy, so when Danielle wanted to paint an astronomy inspired evolution piece, they immediately started talking about collaborating. Danielle and Rachael are both physicists and painters, so this project was a fun way to bring together their two passions.

Evolution of two stars (left to right) that end in very different ways.
