National Impact

A corporation known as ICE (Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad) controls most energy production in Costa Rica. ICE is a monopoly, while operated by the government, prevents competition. The energy industry and construction of sources provides jobs for locals. Some locals, however, are adversely affected when they must move for the implementation of clean energy sources. Indigenous people and their longtime residence had to be moved for the Arenal Lake project. Displacement of natives and disruption of habitats proves to be a challenge for future energy projects.
