A model for hydroelectric production, Arenal contains three dams powered by the lake’s water current. Expanded in 1979 to its current state, the lake provided jobs for locals and tripled in size. To supplement energy production, the lake serves additional purposes by providing a place for tilapia farming. While the lake’s ecology is sound, feeding rivers must be kept clean in order to stock fish.
