Introduction

Known as the greenest country in the world, Costa Rica is a leader in renewable energy production. Without practical access to fossil fuels, their implementation of renewable energy usage demonstrates a structure which can continue regardless of the presence of fossil fuels. Currently, 94% of their electricity is derived from renewable sources, with an aim to become the first carbon-neutral nation by 2021. As a result of a rainy summer, Costa Rica was able to power itself solely on clean sources for the first 75 days of 2015 and did so for 285 days of that year. Hyrdoelectric and geothermal are the nation’s main energy sources, while wind and solar are used only in small-scale applications
