Hydroelectricity

Hydroelectric production, or the generating of energy via turbine in a body of water, is responsible for eighty percent of Costa Rica’s total energy production. The man-made Arenal Lake, near the Pacific Coast, generates 12% of nation’s energy. Hydroelectric production, however, can be affected by adverse weather conditions. Production peaks during periods of heavy rainfall, usually between May and November. While generation is still ample during regular conditions, a fault of hydroelectric production is that it can be deficient during times of drought.
