Geothermal

Geothermal power is derived from heat under the earth’s surface. It is Costa Rica’s second-largest energy source, providing 15% of their energy. With dozens of volcanoes throughout the nation, Costa Rica has the opportunity to harness more energy through geothermal. A main advantage is that it can always be produced, unlike hydroelectric/wind/solar, regardless of weather conditions. ICE has plans for three new geothermal projects to take form in the next decade, with a goal of providing 20% of the nation’s energy by 2035. Though six volcanoes are currently active, some are in national parks where Costa Rican conservationists fight for their surrounding ecosystems to be protected, rendering such geothermal endeavors impossible. Las-Pailas-geothermal-energy-plant-at-Rincon-de-la-Vieja-Volcano-Costa-Rica
