Big 10 Career Expo

Friday, March 14th, from 9AM-3PM, the Big Ten conference in Indianapolis is hosting a Career Expo! The Expo is a unique opportunity for employers to connect with students and alumni from all 12 prestigious universities that make up the Big Ten. The conference is currently comprised of the University of Illinois, Indiana University, University of Iowa, Michigan State University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, University of Nebraska, Northwestern University, Ohio State University, Penn State University, Purdue University and the University of Wisconsin. The Capital Markets Group

The Capital Markets Group on Campus is hosting a Webinar from Akuna Capital

Tuesday, March 4th, 5PM at Wohlers Hall 245

Akuna Capital is a fast-growing derivatives trading firm located in downtown Chicago that specializes in market-making and arbitrage.  Founded in 2011, Akuna has quickly grown from a start-up to a successful leader on US options and futures exchanges with imminent plans for international expansion. At the meeting, Akuna Capital Co-Founders Andrew Killion (CEO) and Mitchell Skinner (Head of Trading) as well as Senior Trader Peter Berger will be attending the webinar and walk through the general questions regarding proprietary trading and tips on trading interviews.  Time will be reserved at the end for an open Q&A. The Capital Markets Group at UIUC was established to provide students, interested in the capital markets and passionate about trading, with the guidance and tools necessary to gain hands-on experience in investment research and portfolio management. The Career Services Paraprofessionals are charged with the following responsibilities:
• Work a minimum of 6 hours per week
• Attend required bi-weekly meetings
• Participate in project work that supports TCC’s initiatives as needed

• Attend two full-day mandatory training sessions upon hire on April 5th, 2014 and August 23rd, 2014

Certificates are a great way to add to your resume and a great talking point to showcase all of your abilities. Please see below for a list of some of our most popular certificates.

NOTE: The college of media offers a wide variety of certificates, for information all all of their offering please contact them.

The Leadership Certificate:

The Leadership Certificate is a multi-semester structured program designed to provide students with a customized experience to help develop leadership skills in a way that integrates leadership education, reflection, and experience. Certificate students are matched with a Leadership Coach to partner with during the program and create a Leadership Portfolio documenting their leadership growth upon completion. The Certificate Program is grounded in the Illinois Philosophy of Leadership which states that “all students can exercise leadership” and a skills-based model of leadership development. The enrollment periods to begin the Certificate occur during the first 10 weeks of each Fall and Spring semester. Public Relations Certificate

This professional development program provides a practical foundation in the principles and practice of public relations. The undergraduate-level coursework is designed for students from any discipline who wish to develop public relations competencies and skills to enhance their primary area of study or expertise. Public relations is important to many disciplines, including engineering, English, computer science, communication, business, agricultural communications, and numerous others. You can find information on how toapply, core courses, and other requirements on the webiste.

Computer Science Certificates

The certificates can be acquired after you obtain your bachelor’s degree. Each certificate requires a completion of three 4-credit hour courses (4 hours each, a total of 12 hours) identified in the certificates offerings below. The grade in each course must be a B or higher and all three courses must be completed within a two year timeframe. When all three courses have been completed, please contact Rhonda McElroy at rmcelroy@illinois.edu to request a review of completed courses and pending successful completion, a certificate. LENS (Diversity) Certificate

The LENS Diversity Certificate Program is a year-long cohort program that helps Illinois students build important skills and practice for engaging diversity on campus and beyond. LENS Diversity Certificate participants take courses, attend workshops and regular cohort meetings, and design their own action project.

The LENS Diversity Certificate is open to any university student with a full academic year (fall to spring) remaining. Applications to the LENS Diversity Certificate are accepted in late spring through early fall. For more information regarding the program, please visit theLENS Website.

Professional Advertising Certificate

Our Professional Advertising Certificate Programs provide an opportunity for advertising, marketing, and communications professionals to enhance their knowledge of brand communication in today’s global context through short courses and other activities. Certificate enrollees participate in sessions with industry professionals from the Midwest

Our comprehensive certificate programs will allow those enrolled to gain industry-specific, distinctive skills in communicating across channels while keeping a consumer-centric approach. Media Sales Certificate

This new program will provide students with a valuable set of skills which could help them towards developing a career in the advertising/media sales industry. All of the new sales-related courses have been approved and the curriculum has been set. The program will consist of 15 credit hours and will require the following courses:

MDIA 270 (Introduction to Media Sales)

BTW 271 (Persuasive Writing)

MDIA 320 (Sales Management)

MDIA 370 (Advanced Media Sales)

MDIA 495 (Internship/Individual Study)

Global Business

The goal of this certificate program is to incorporate the business in foreign language and international studies programs. This program will encourage students in LAS and other colleges outside of Business to develop foreign language expertise with international business incorporated into their particular program of study. This certificate has four required components, including a total of five semester courses and an international experience. The requirements are as follows:

  • a foreign language through the fifth semester, including a specific business language course if available.
  • two global studies courses from the list below.
  • two international business courses.
  • an overseas study/internship experience of at least six weeks.

Welcome Back!

Hello Students, welcome back to campus! I hope you all had a great winter break and are ready to embark on the Spring 2014 semester adventure! Right now is a very busy time for our office, so the blog may not be updated for another week or so.  Walk in hours for the week of January 27th-January 31st are as follows:

Monday: 2pm-4pm (only come if you are around the area, it is too cold to be walking over)

Tuesday: 9:30-11:30, 2pm-4pm

Wednesday: 10am-12pm

Thursday: 10am-12pm, 1:30-3:30pm

 

Stay warm! Remember if you feel it is too cold to go to class please alert your professor and stay home if need be

 

 

Winter Break and New Site

Hello Everyone!  I hope finals went well for you! The semester has come to an end and now you can enjoy a whole month with friends and family, but we wanted to introduce a new blog to you. The careers blog!! Based off of what students reported in the Careers Survey this blog was created to better serve you and your after college needs. The careers blog not only discusses everything related to careers but also prepping for careers! We also feature alumni and soon enough will have information on graduate school. The blog will do what blog’s do and be updated and added to as much as possible. Enjoy!

Fall Break

Hello Everyone!

Registration Season is almost over! I sure hope you had wonderful luck getting into classes that you needed/ wanted. Classes will still be opening up as students withdraw from them. Remember you have until the second week of classes to change your schedule around.

Next week is Fall break, if you celebrate Thanksgiving we wish you a happy holiday! If you are taking the week off to relax and explore we wish you safe travels! Have a great week off from classes!
