Udall Scholarship Informational Events 11/5 & 11/6:

The University of Illinois seeks to nominate sophomores and juniors for the prestigious Udall Scholarship. The Udall awards $7,000 to sophomores or juniors who are taking action to address environmental concerns and are committed to a career related to the environment.

There are special awards also for Native American students interested in tribal policy or health care (no need to be related to the environment).

Students must be US citizens, US nationals, or US permanent residents. A successful applicant will have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate leadership and a commitment to service. The campus deadline is February 4, 2021 to be considered.

HISTORY panel: legacies of WWII, 75 Years after

The Department of History and Phi Alpha Theta are hosting a special panel commemorating 75 years since the end of the Second World War on Thursday, November 5 from 7:00-8:15 PM (CDT).

This much anticipated event features Professors Eugene Avrutin, Peter Fritzsche, John Lynn, and Roderick Wilson of the History Department. They will each speak about a different facet of the Second World War’s complex and far-reaching legacy:

• Peter Fritzsche: “World War I, World War II, and the War Against Civilians”
• Roderick Wilson, “Asia-Pacific War”
• John Lynn: “The Terrorist Threat in the United States”
• Eugene Avrutin, “Postwar Reconstructions in the Soviet Union”

LAS Winter Convocation Virtual Celebration:

The college is planning a virtual celebration to recognize the December 2020 and August 2020 graduates. Degree candidates will receive a link to a pre-recorded virtual celebration on Friday, Dec. 18. LAS will provide a padded diploma cover to those who do not intend to participate in a future in-person ceremony. Coursera for University Students Program Available for Illinois Students:

The Urbana-Champaign campus is now participating in the Coursera for University and College Students Program. Offered for a limited time as a response to increased course demand due to COVID-19, the program enables University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign faculty, staff, and students free access to content from Coursera’s other academic and industry partners. The enrollment deadline is Saturday, Oct. 31, and the deadline to complete courses is Thursday, Dec. 31.

Bailey Unpaid Internship Scholarship:

Are you interested in an unpaid internship but are concerned about the financial hardship it may cause? The Fred S. Bailey Unpaid Internship Scholarship Program offers academic scholarships to undergraduate students at the University of Illinois who will complete an unpaid internship with a public service agency or not-for-profit organization. Awards are $1,000 for a part-time internship or $2,500 for a full-time internship and are given directly to the student. All undergraduate students regardless of academic program or citizenship status are encouraged to apply. Mental Health Resources:

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has many resources to help students. The university has developed a new app called WellTrack to help you track your moods and teach you about techniques to effectively manage challenging emotions and situations. To access the WellTrack, follow these steps:

• Download the app from Google Play or the App Store.
• Once in the WellTrack app, enter your Illinois email address and click Continue.
• Agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy and click Sign In.
• Enter your university NetID and password and click Login.
• In the resulting screen, click Done (located bottom left).
• You can also access the WellTrack via the web at WellTrack.com with your Illinois email and password.

Below are additional resources available to students to help support mental wellness. These can be used alone to enhance your mental health self-care or in conjunction with counseling services.

• Counseling Center Psychoeducational Series—The Counseling Center regularly offers workshops that give you powerful tools to develop resiliency and goal achievement skills. Topics include overcoming perfectionism, managing time, overcoming difficult emotions, improving focus, and using mindfulness to reduce stress and anxiety. • Kognito At-Risk—This interactive, online training allows you to practice what you would say if you are concerned about a friend or classmate who is showing signs of mental distress. • Mindwise Mental Health Screenings—These brief, online screenings assess for concerns such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, substance misuse, and eating disorders. The screenings can be a good first step to determine if counseling may be something to consider. To access this training, visit the Counseling Center’s website.
• Healthiest You—Students who have United Healthcare through the university can access online counseling via telehelp4students.com. If you access this site through your UnitedHealthcare app, you can bypass the necessary insurance information requirement. Beinecke Scholarship Informational Events 10/29 & 10/30:

If you are a high-achieving junior and plan to attend graduate school after graduation to pursue research in the arts, humanities or social sciences, but have concerns about being able to afford it, consider applying for the Beinecke Scholarship.

The Beinecke Foundation is looking for students who have demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement, and personal promise during their undergraduate years. The program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated U.S. citizen juniors to pursue graduate studies for scholarly research in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Each scholar receives $4,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. Preference is given to candidates for whom the awarding of significant financial aid would increase the likelihood of the student’s being able to attend graduate school.

The University of Illinois is one of a select few institutions that may endorse a candidate for the Beinecke Scholarship. The National and International Scholarships Program has planned two sessions to assist students interested in earning this $34,000 award. The campus deadline for nomination is January 20, 2021. Wallace Stevens Prize Competition:

The English Department has announced this year’s Wallace Stevens Prize for best essay on modern American or British poetry (1900-1939) by an undergraduate English department major or minor. The best critical essay will receive an award of $500. Entries are due November 5, 2020.  For more information, see the flyer.

Guidelines for Submission:

• Length/Word limit: strict 5,000 words maximum for undergraduate entries
• All entries must be submitted as wither .docx or .pdf files
• Entries must be double-spaced with 12-point font
• MLA style should be used
• Eligibility: any student enrolled in an English department major or minor at Illinois during the previous 12 months before the submission deadline
• One essay per entrant per year; previous winners are not eligible

Confidential Advisor services has now been expanded to offer both phone and virtual support beginning Monday, October 5^th. Submit to the AWP Intro Journals Project (Fiction, Poetry, Creative Nonfiction):

The Intro Journals Project is a literary competition for the discovery and publication of the best new works by students currently enrolled in AWP member programs. The Creative Writing faculty of the English department at the UIUC can nominate one story, one essay, and three poems to this national award.

If you are currently a CW major or a CW minor or an MFA candidate and would like to be considered for nomination, send one short story (max. 25 pages), one essay (max. 25 pages), or up to three poems via email attachment to John Dudek at jdudek4@illinois.edu by 12:00 noon, Monday, November 2, 2020.
