Freshmen and sophomores: Do you want to study in the United Kingdom this summer for free?

Freshmen and sophomores,

Do you want to study in the United Kingdom this summer for free? The Fulbright UK Summer Institutes offer five programs for this upcoming summer:

  • Interested in climate change? Explore how STEM can support sustainability at the University of Exeter.
  • Interested in identity and nationhood? Join the Aberstwyth University and its Center for Welsh Politics and Society.
  • Interested in arts as activism? Consider how literature, music, visual arts, poetry and storytelling, dance, philosophy, and critical social theories have shaped movements for social justice across the globe at the University of Bristol.
  • Interested in technology and innovation? Explore Scotland’s creative and technological industries through study at the University of Strathclyde and the Glasgow School of Art.
  • Interested in Northern Ireland’s historical, cultural, and political, environment? Engage with local people and visit a range of cultural sites with the Queen’s University Belfast program.

The Summer Institutes cover the majority of the participant costs (round-trip airfare from the US to the UK, tuition and fees at the university, room and board, and social programs).  Students must be US citizen freshmen or sophomores with a GPA of 3.7 or above.

The National and International Scholarship Program will be hosting an information session for high-achieving freshman and sophomore students to learn about the Fulbright UK Summer Institutes. The information session will take place Thursday, January 12th from 3:30 – 4:30 pm. Use this link to register in advance.

Summer Study in Korea in Korean and Film or other area of interest

ACES and LAS are pleased to share a new summer study abroad opportunity that will be open to students across campus!

The Summer Study and Intern Program at Chungnam National University in South Koreaoffers students an opportunity to take intensive Korean language courses and study subjects in their majors or areas of interest for 4 weeks. Some of the additional subjects include Big Data, GIS, Global Marketing, and Film. No prior Korean language experience is required for the 4-weeks of coursework.

Students can participate in an optional 2-week internship after their coursework. The internships are well suited for students interested in Animal Science, Biology, Natural Sciences, Public Service, and Nonprofits. Some internships require basic Korean language proficiency or pre-requisite experience in a specific subject area. These details are outlined on the My Study Abroad program page.  **Students will not receive credit for their internships through CNU, so we will encourage them to speak to you about whether departmental internship or independent study credit may be possible.

As part of the program, students will also engage in experiential learning activities to gain a better understanding of the history, culture, and important natural environment surrounding Daejeon.=

This is an exchange and the on-site housing is offered at no additional cost, so we hope that this will program will be financially accessible for students.

The deadline to apply for the summer 2023 program is February 15. Students can email aces-studyabroad@illinois.edu or las-studyabroad@illinois.edu to learn more.

Library Services for All Students

Research consultations are a great way for students to receive help with research papers. Students can receive one-on-one help with any research questions they have, such as brainstorming a research topic, finding and evaluating sources, keyword searches, and more. Research consultations are not meant to check citations or proof-read papers. Students can make an appointment using our calendar.
Although this is still a work in progress, we are hoping to be officially open in a few weeks! The Library has been collaborating with the Communications Department to set up a Speaking Center for students. The Speaking Center will have consultations available for students to prepare for class presentations, speeches, or to just become more confident in their public speaking skills. Workshops will also be available. I will send out more information once consultations are available for students to sign up for.
Informal Language Conversation Sessions
As part of the Speaking Center, informal language sessions are being offered periodically through the semester. Students can look for upcoming sessions on our events calendar. Next Wednesday, from 3-4pm, French will be offered. These are unstructured, casual, conversations, perfect for students who just want to practice their language skills in a non-academic setting, or who want more informal practice before they study abroad.
Academic Success Series (geared towards International Students)
The Counseling Center has been working with the Library to set up monthly workshops regarding mental health and academic success, designed with our international students in mind. The next session, Cultural Adjustment and Classroom Culture, is October 11th at 4pm.
If you know of any student parents or student caregivers, please encourage them to use our Family Student Room! Family Kits are available to check out by age range, and a pack n’ play and kid tablets will be available to use any day.
Please let me know if there are any questions.
