Writer’s Workshop

The Writers Workshop provides free, one-to-one writing feedback for any type of writing and at any stage of the writing process. This includes course papers, speeches, senior capstones, personal statements, resumes and cover letters, group writing projects, theses or dissertations, or manuscripts for publication. We have appointments and drop-in hours, and we’re available in-person and online.

In addition to our one-to-one writing feedback, we host a range of presentations and events. More information is available on our calendar, and I’ve attached an at-a-glance-schedule.

Please contact me with any questions.
Sincerely,
Carolyn

University Library Programs for Students

The University Library has workshops, consultation services, programs, and other helpful things for students. You can see them in the events calendar, as well as our Savvy Researcher workshops, which cover a lot of “how-to” library resource sessions.
Research consultations: Students can receive help with their research papers, ranging from brainstorming a topic to synthesizing their sources.  Consultations are from 4-9pm, Sunday-Thursday, and are geared towards first- and second-year students.
Students can sign up for a consultation to work one-on-one with a trained Speaking Consultant to improve presentations and speeches, attend workshops focused on building lasting speaking skills, or participate in language sessions to build foreign language skills. Upcoming workshops include “Coping with Speech Anxiety” and “Nonverbal Communication for Presentations.
The Academic Success Series is in collaboration with the Counseling Center, and covers topics like “Healthy Relationships,” “Imposter Syndrome,” and more. Our Student Success Workshops will include some repeats from the fall, like “Study Skills for Neurodiverse Students,” and “Budgeting 101,” and also introduce new workshops, like “Using and Creating a LinkedIn Profile.”

Funded by the Library Innovation and Seed Grant, this series highlights members of the UIUC community who have done important work highlighting underrepresented voices.

If any of your students are parents or caregivers, there is a space for them in the Main Library! Students can bring their kids with them to the Library, and can also check out Family Kits, a playpen, or children tablets for their children to play with while they study.

LAS Academic Success Workshops

The LAS Academic Success Workshop Schedule is available here.

Open to all students, LAS workshops are designed to help students gain a better understanding of how tests work in Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Physics and Psychology, and how those approaches may require different study techniques from those they used successfully in high school.

Library Services for All Students

Research consultations are a great way for students to receive help with research papers. Students can receive one-on-one help with any research questions they have, such as brainstorming a research topic, finding and evaluating sources, keyword searches, and more. Research consultations are not meant to check citations or proof-read papers. Students can make an appointment using our calendar.
Although this is still a work in progress, we are hoping to be officially open in a few weeks! The Library has been collaborating with the Communications Department to set up a Speaking Center for students. The Speaking Center will have consultations available for students to prepare for class presentations, speeches, or to just become more confident in their public speaking skills. Workshops will also be available. I will send out more information once consultations are available for students to sign up for.
Informal Language Conversation Sessions
As part of the Speaking Center, informal language sessions are being offered periodically through the semester. Students can look for upcoming sessions on our events calendar. Next Wednesday, from 3-4pm, French will be offered. These are unstructured, casual, conversations, perfect for students who just want to practice their language skills in a non-academic setting, or who want more informal practice before they study abroad.
Academic Success Series (geared towards International Students)
The Counseling Center has been working with the Library to set up monthly workshops regarding mental health and academic success, designed with our international students in mind. The next session, Cultural Adjustment and Classroom Culture, is October 11th at 4pm.
If you know of any student parents or student caregivers, please encourage them to use our Family Student Room! Family Kits are available to check out by age range, and a pack n’ play and kid tablets will be available to use any day.
Please let me know if there are any questions.

Wellness for All Students

“Wellness” is a general term for student health: physical and psychological, in life inside and outside of academic experience.

Student wellness has become one of the top priorities on campus. Many students are feeling overwhelmed by the pressure of achievement and glorification of stress.

A new Web resource has been established as a first jumping off place for wellness resources on campus.
