The News-Gazette

The News-Gazette is a daily print publication that has been operating since 1919. It is independently owned. The media group that owns the Gazette also operates radio stations WDWS, which reports news, WHMS, which plays hits and WKIL, which plays oldies.

The Gazette houses 29 people full-time. This includes reporters, sports writers, copy editors, photographers, clerks as well as a librarian. They also have two part-time photographers, five temporary part-time score takers, and 11 editors for a total of 47 people on staff.

They are a subscription based service and utilize a pay wall to access online content. Readers can view up to eight articles a month before they are required to sign up for a subscription. Print subscribers automatically gain full access to all web content.

The Gazette offers a number of subscription options, such as 7-day subscriptions, weekend subscriptions, Sunday only subscriptions, digital only subscriptions and Illini HQ subscriptions.

The online paywall was implemented in 2013. In the past, the publication had as many as three different editions, but currently has one edition and their website. Dan Corkery, managing editor for administration, said that the decision to enforce the paywall was an economic one. “Our work has value and that’s reflected in the newsstand price and the price of an online subscription” said Corkery. “Note that all print subscribers are also paying for the online access; it’s a package deal.”
