Research Project Job Opportunity

Curriculum and Instruction Clinical Assistant Professor Sheila Dean would like to hire 3-4 education students to work about 25-35 hours each on the project described below at the rate of $10/hour, preferably during spring semester, but the project completion date is August, so summer work is also possible.  If interested, contact Sheila Dean at srdean@illinois.edu.

Students will work on a project to develop a K-12 sustainability resource (online) for Illinois teachers and pre-service teachers.  One part of this resource will be an annotated bibliography of the better-quality materials.  Another part of the resource will be example problem-based units addressing both local and global sustainability issues.  Another part will be a good, complete brief overview of all of the facets of sustainability and example interdisciplinary introductory lessons.  Finally, it will include general guidelines for teachers to use to develop their own PBL sustainability units focused around their own very specific local issues. Students working on the project will primarily be searching for appropriate materials online and in published form, compiling information, and possibly modifying or writing lesson plans and units. No specific experience is required but website development experience would be useful.

Writers Workshop Peer Tutors Needed

The Writers Workshop is looking for a few exceptional undergraduates to join our PEER TUTORS. These students should be sophomores, juniors, or seniors in any major next year. They should write very well and enjoy working with other students on writing.  If you are interested, please send your name and email address as soon as you can to Libbie Morley elmorley@illinois.edu.

The Writers Workshop Undergraduate Peer Tutoring Program seeks:

*  To provide professional experience to undergraduates interested in teaching, writing, research, or consulting careers or in graduate and professional education.

*  To provide academic inquiry in Writing Studies.

*  To provide undergraduate students in general with additional writing tutoring services in the Writers Workshop. Peer tutors will work only with other undergraduates; they will not replace the graduate student consultants.

Peer tutors will take WRIT 203 in Fall 2013 as training. During Spring 2014, they will tutor on a regular schedule as part of an independent study course. In future semesters they may be chosen to tutor for hourly pay.

Please reply by February 28. We appreciate your help as your suggestions are essential to our recruitment.

Summer School Faculty Application

Dear students,

Northbrook/Glenview District 30 is a suburban K-8 district with a rich, developing partnership with the College of Education.

Each year, District 30 runs a substantial summer school program, featuring innovative courses that enrich students’ education over the long vacation.

Because of our partnership, District 30 administration is seeking College of Education applicants to be a part of this summer program.  In particular, they are looking for course instructors (likely recent graduates or advanced teacher education students), teaching assistants (any level in the program), and even volunteers.

Below is the announcement and application link from Mr. Chris Brown, the summer school director.  Although the information below reads as if most hiring will be done within District 30 faculty, I assure you that the district does plan to hire some UIUC candidates.  In the application, you will be able to indentify yourself as a University of Illinois student.

Please review the material carefully and consider applying.  Note: The application deadline is February 8, 2013.  If you have any questions, you should contact Mr. Brown directly.

Thank you!

Jay A. Mann

Director, Office of Clinical Experiences

This year’s Summer Program will be held at Maple School for five weeks starting on Monday, June 10th and ending on Friday, July 12th. There will be no summer school on Thursday, July 4th. Otherwise, summer school is 5 days per week from 8:30am-12:30pm. There are two TENTATIVE dates below to be aware of: Thursday, June 6 – Summer School Institute Half Day 8:30am-12:30pm Friday, July 6 – No Summer School Classes More information on this over the next few months.

Depending upon enrollment and teacher interest, faculty may choose to teach up to four courses with a commensurate salary.

We are particularly interested in expanding our course selection, especially in the areas of outdoor athletics, writing, or technology, and welcome any new course ideas with your application. Certain classes receive many faculty applications and it is difficult to assign them if enrollment is not sufficient. Your chances for a position increase by offering a new course.

This form serves two purposes: 1. Your application demographic information 2. Your class preference(s) including any new classes you want to propose. Criteria for selection will include: 1. Ability to instruct in the subject area 2. Years of service to District #30 3. Years of service to District #30 Summer School 4. Total years of teaching experience

The deadline for this application is Friday, February 8. Student enrollment applications will open in late March. With this time frame in mind we will notify those hired on a rolling basis starting April1. Hiring will continue as classes fill to the minimum number of students.

Thank you for your interest in our summer school program and we look forward to a great summer experience for our students!
