Minor Assignment2

Civility is the unique characterization of human beings that it units people by conveying respect. The three articles are all related to civility in different aspect. At 10 years old, Howard White learned his guidepost about the importance of greeting others from his mother. From then on, he started to regard saying “Hello” to others as a daily habit, but not the tool of flattering upper classes. As White greets members in his company from day to day, not only he knows people, earns positions, but also happiness is generated, to each other in every exchanged greetings. I really love what he says,’ every person deserves to feel someone acknowledge in their presence, no matter how humble they may be or even how important.’ Yes! Everyone wants to be acknowledged and they all have their unique merits. When saying ‘Hello’, we are on the equal position and we both feel respected. Isn’t that the main goal of civility?

The second passage by Carolyn Hax explains why people always have the tendency to look at the negative. On her view, in the short run, people fail to see the faults on their side and therefore they always blame others. Thus, in the long run, the accumulated pessimism leads to lack of happiness. Finally, feeling joy is even either deceiving themselves or accepting the inferior life. I really have a struggling period in my middle school just like above. When I felt I can hardly catch up with my Math class, I started to hate my math teacher because he was teaching so fast. I went to class under huge pressure and can hardly take study as a joy. However, life should go on and we need to keep optimistic. What I can relate this to civility is that we should always try to control our emotions and stand on others’ perspectives, to find what we have done wrong–do not let bad mood capture your mind. Even when we are extremely unhappy, basic manner should not be forgotten.

In ‘Student rights and responsibilities,’ the author stresses that members in universities are granted completed rights with responsibilities that must be fulfilled. In fact, taking charge of our responsibilities is itself an important civility. When we do not interfere with the rights of others, respect for their dignity, belief and obey rules in the institution, we are contributing to a more regulated and peaceful community. For example, by showing real levels of knowledge in quiz, we are showing respect to our teachers, school and ourselves.

In all, we ought to take greetings as a habit, control ourselves and obey. the rules. Then, you will see, civility gives its feedback.

Reflection:

The revision of essay mainly covers grammar because the main idea is already refined. When reading the feedback, I have learned about correct usage of punctuations like the period should be written inside the quotation mark. Also, I should  wisely consider how I should cite people’s work by using their last name and illustrations. Last, I ought to remember not to write run-on again and form sentences more concisely.
