Minor Assignment1

Race Card Portfolio

My race card: Not color but culture makes differences.

From my perspective, I do not agree with the proposals in “Unpacking the Invisible knapsack” that we should eliminate the white privilege, which is a kind of oppression that most people are oblivious of. In fact, it is not that people’s races form the dominance over others, but the differences in culture. It is the backgrounds that people are born, form the gap. This kind of advantage is hard to be fixed, because it is rooted in people’s cultural foundation. For example, the white privilege exist in America mostly because white people are the founders of the country. Thus, from long time ago, they started to receive high education and became elite of the society. Those reasons lead to the dominance of the whites, but not discrimination. Also, the advantages of white can hardly be changed in a moment or with any new policies- only time can let Americas find the new balance to make colored people proud.

Reflection:

Races is a sensitive topic, especially in America where so many races can be found. I tried to present my own views on the conflict between white and colored, that the white dominance can traced in history, from the aspect of culture. Of course, colored people will ultimately be as educated and competent, but it just takes time. When revising my essay, I wanted to make my points more clear that I am not a supporter of discrimination, but the differences in culture form gaps of living quality. Also, I tried to make my sentences more concise by using brief words and more fluent by adding illustrations.
