Race Card Portfolio

My race card: Not color but culture makes differences.

From my perspective, I do not agree with the proposals in “Unpacking the Invisible knapsack” that we should try to eliminate the white previlege, which is a kind of  oppression that most people are oblivious of. In fact, it is not the poeple’s races that forms the dominance, but the differences in culture, the background that people are born, form the gap. This kind of advantage is also hard to be fixed, because it is rooted in people’s cultural foundation. For example, the white previlege exist in America mostly bacause white people are the founders of the country so they can be pround. Plus, most white people started to receive high education from long time ago, which leads to their dominance. Those advantages of white can hardly be changed and only time can let American people find the new balance.

Research Questions

One question I want to talk about is whether guns have really given the citizens rights to protect themselves. It is important because while guns can give people on the weak side safety, they also garantee that anyone can use strong this weapons to harm others, on matter who they are. Thus, the stake of easy gun access should be considered. I would like to do this nsing contrastion of data, that I am going to compare the number of inicidents of gun protecting people and harming people. Another question I want to talk about is how strict should we limit gun usage. Should we completely prohibit it? Or should we only use stronger rules? In what ways? It is important because the degree ofabolition is related to the emotions of huge number of gun lovers, and it can significantly influence gun market in the future. I am planning to set a questionaire for this part.

About my research

As recently a shooting incidence just happened in our campus, I hope to talk about gun control for my paper. Gun control is an old topic in America, but it is still controversial nowadays that a consensus has never been made. People agreeing with the control deem guns as hidden dangers for citizens, while people against it claim that owning a gun is citizens’ basics rights to protect themselves. For me, I definitely agree that gun should be prohibited, that so far as I know, for most of the cases guns do more harm than protection. However, I still have to do a lot of research in this area, and I plan to get most of the resources form libraries and some as supports from the internet. I extremely agree with the article that researching on the topic is “like all the tumblers are clicking into place”, and I believe my research is going to give me an exciting experience of exploring a new world like in the paragraph.

My ideas from the feedback

I have noticed lots of aspects that I can improve from the feedback of my first graded Critical Response. The first aspect is definitely format. For example, I should learn to use standard essay format, which properly Indents paragraphs and does not put extra spaces between paragraphs. Plus, I should never forget to add a conclusive title followed by my name. The second aspect comes to grammar, which significantly impacts readers’ first impression. I ought to gradually form these good writing habits by reading text book often. For instance, I can read section P5-b of my handbook to learn that single quote marks are only used for a quote within a quote. Also, by reading P5-e in my handbook, I will know periods and commas are inside quotation marks. Finally, the third aspects should be evolving my own academic abilities. Although I have written some good conclusive sentences and carefully observed examples, my writing is still far from excellent. In the future, I will read more books, accumulate more vocabularies, write in more strategies and broaden my mind to become a better writer .
