Portfolio Quiz – Metaphor

The best metaphor for my writing is like a little kid because of the actions and portrayal a kid usually shows. Little kids tend to not always want to do stuff they do not like; therefore, for me, I do not like to write papers or edit essays. However, they have to do certain things in school since it is required and mandatory for all children to go to school. The kid will not want to do it at first since they are confused or puzzled, but they will have to be pushed in order to achieve their goals. For me, I have always been bad at writing since I never feel encouraged to do it and hate to do the work. I do it because I have to, and it is required for me when it comes to school. I will never forget how long it took me to develop my reading and writing school throughout the years; it is like a kid since they always are learning and trying to achieve more in school. I remember I would feel accomplished whenever I received a good grade on my paper; kid usually go show their parents their good grades and tend to hang them up on the wall or fridge. I will always have that little kid inside me when I am writing and know I can achieve so much more if I just keep trying. Little kids usually tend to cry when they do not get what they want or when they are in pain; I feel down or sad when I receive a bad grade and know I could of done better.

Another metaphor would be a bird’s nest. I would compare my writing to a bird’s nest since you need all the best materials to create the best bird’s nest; therefore, I need the best intro, body, evidence, support, conclusion, and many more to create the best essay. If you get materials that are easy to find or make, then the bird’s nest might hold up. Same goes for my writing, if I do not put 100% effort into my writing, it will reflect the grade I receive and what kind of feedback I will receive as well. Bird's Nest

Portfolio Topic

My research paper topic is going to be about the “Violence in Chicago”. I decided on the topic since I was not familiar with the violence in Chicago but always heard about it on the news or from peers. I went to a high school in downtown Chicago, so it was hard to live a normal high school life. I know there were a lot of schools that did not have the safety or education like my school, so I know there were a lot of struggling neighborhoods that struggled with violence. Additionally, there were a lot of protests and issues in downtown when there was an issue with violence or justice. However, I never knew all the information about the crimes and issues. I want to learn more about the violence in Chicago and see if there is a solution for all the issues that have approached. There has been a lot of plans of changing the violence in Chicago but nothing has been working essentially.

Portfolio-Exploring Topics

Dear Justin (Close friend since grammar school),

Hi Justin! I am writing you this letter because I need help on a Rhet 105 paper. I have to choose a topic for a research paper that is exigent and will not make the paper boring. I am thinking about writing a topic about the transition from high school to college. I could talk about the personality changes, responsibilities acquired, and freedom achieved in college compared to high school. There can be little topics based on going to an in-state school vs. out of state school; it could be a huge transition for a student, so I want to go into further studies for the topic. I could interview multiple students and see how their transition was; college is a time where you make memories, so I want to see how things change for students throughout their life. I was also thinking about a topic based on how social a student can be after he goes from high school to college. I know a lot of people that can come out of their shell and become a more social or independent person. What do you think? I hope to hear from you soon! Thanks!

Sincerely, Jonathan Basa
