Which are the most popular news and articles?

As a web content provider, I want to know what news and event articles are accessed the most so I can continue to focus on topics that interest our audience.

Requires:

  • Google Analytics 4 installed
  • A way to filter what you are looking at by URL

Steps:

  1. Log into Google Analytics
  2. Go to Explore, choose Free Form
  3. Title your exploration name
  4. Choose a date range
  5. Add the following dimensions: Page title, Page path, and Screen class
  6. Add the following metrics: Total Users, Views, Events per Session
  7. Tab Settings:
    • Technique: Free form
    • Visualization: Table
    • Segment Comparisons: none
    • Rows: Page title
    • Columns: None
    • Values: Sessions, Events per Session
    • Filters: Page path and screen class — add the URL you need to filter your results

Considerations:

If you have internal filters, the information will be filtered out.

Total Users indicates the number of users that have seen the page.

Views indicate the number of individual page hits.

Events per session are used to give a general sense of engagement.

Further data exploration:

You can choose a row, right click and choose “View users“, and drill down to individual users to see where they went after this.

You can add “Page referrer” as a dimension and a column to see where users are being referred from

Additional indicators of engagement include “Event count” and “Average Session Duration”.

Remember that when you change an existing report, you are changing it forever. Make a copy or use a new report if you want to explore.
