Where is my audience coming from?

As a marketer, I want to know what percentage of users are in-state versus out-of-state versus international so I can target the proper audience.

Requires:

Google Analytics 4 installed

Steps:

  1. Log into Google Analytics
  2. Go to Explore, choose Free Form
  3. Title your exploration name
  4. Choose a date range
  5. Add the following dimensions: Event name, Country, Region
  6. Add the following metrics: Total Users, Views
  7. Tab Settings:
    • Technique: Free form
    • Visualization: Table
    • Segment Comparisons: none
    • Rows: Country, Region
    • Columns: Event name
    • Values: Total Users, Views
    • Filters: None

Considerations:

If you have internal filters, the information will be filtered out.

The “(not set)” for region is for smaller countries that do not have regions.

VPN and other tools may skew the data, so this information is going to be a rough estimate.

If you are looking at a specific section (like online information), you can use add a Page path dimension and filter the list by URL.

Total Users indicates the number of users that have seen the page.

Views indicate the number of individual page hits.

Events per session are used to give a general sense of engagement.
