*COVID-19 Updates and Summer Language Programs*

We are currently monitoring the status of the institutions that we partner with for summer foreign language study and will provide updates as soon as they are available. Below are details on specific institutions:

Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World 
The Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World at the University of Illinois will hold a virtual institute for Summer 2020. All classes will be online. The registration deadline has been extended to May 15, 2020.

Middlebury Russian Language School
According to the Middlebury Language School website, “Due to COVID-19, the Middlebury Language School has cancelled all on-campus programs for Summer 2020. We are currently accepting applications for alternative online programs.” For updates: Language Schools FAQ and http://go.middlebury.edu/covid19

Indiana University Summer Language Workshop
Due to COVID-19, Indiana University has moved all Language Workshop online. Please see the website for more information. There is also a designated site for coronavirus updates, which can be found here. The website also states to check its Facebook and Instagram pages for frequent updates.

Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI) and Wisconsin Intensive Summer Language Institute
According to the Wisconsin Intensive Summer Language Institute website, “The Wisconsin Intensive Summer Language Institutes (WISLI) will offer virtual language instruction in summer 2020. Critical Languages Institute, Arizona State University
According to ASU’s Critical Languages Institute website, “On March 25, 2020 ASU announced its decision to cancel ALL summer 2020 study-abroad programs, including domestic ones. In line with this decision, and in order to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff, the Critical Languages Institute made the decision to move our summer intensive language programs online for summer 2020.”

Summer Language Institute, University of Pittsburgh
Pitt’s Summer Language Institute has moved to online classes: Virtual SLI. The program dates are June 15-August 7 for 8-week programs in Arabic and Russian; June 29-August 7 for 6-week programs in Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Slovak, Ukrainian. According the SLI website, “Classes will take place face-to-face via Zoom Monday-Friday, 11:00am-4:30pm EST with a lunch recess and a few short breaks built into the schedule.” For more details, please see https://www.sli.pitt.edu/

Intensive Russian Program, Center for Language Studies at Beloit College
The Center for Language Studies (CLS) at Beloit College has moved their summer programs online in response to COVID-19. Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

FLAS Fellowships are administered by the University of Illinois National Resource Centers and are awarded competitively through an annual competition. REEEC FLAS fellowships may be used for the study of a language of Russia, Eastern Europe, or the post-Soviet successor states; refer to the Illinois FLAS website for a list of eligible languages, eligibility, and application procedures.

Students in the M.A. program who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible to compete for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships offered under the Higher Education Act, Title VI, US Department of Education. Awards will be given for interdisciplinary language and area studies, including the study of Russian or other languages of Eastern Europe and the former USSR. FLAS Fellowships provide a tuition and fee waiver, and a stipend.
