Center for Social & Behavioral Science

The Center for Social and Behavioral Science (CSBS) was created to help address some of the grand challenges facing society that can be answered using the deep social and behavioral science expertise housed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In particular, the CSBS focuses on three grand challenges: solving poverty, the effect of the digital revolution on society, and the role of social and behavioral factors in health. Since these grand challenges cut across many different colleges and departments, the CSBS fosters interdisciplinary research teams that harness the complementary strengths of the Illinois faculty.

CSBS Services

To address these grand challenges, the CSBS works within our research and academic communities in the following ways:

  1. Provide institutional infrastructure (through seed funding, proposal development support, and curating external funding resources) to help social and behavioral scientists conduct high impact research.
  2. Serve the social and behavioral science community by delivering training opportunities (methods workshops and webinars), and highlighting the depth and breadth of social science expertise on our campus.
  3. Act as the hub for community organizations and national groups seeking applied social and behavioral science expertise to aid in their efforts to address some of the grand challenges facing society today.
  4. Engaging University of Illinois students in community-based research and service.
