Artist Statement

Welcome to my e-profolio! I am Lauren Spencer, a student in Professor Mary Hays’ Rhetoric 101 and 100 class. I fit into the classroom community through my ability to paint my thoughts on a sheet of paper. I feel closely connected to all of my papers in this class because I felt like I had the freedom to let my thoughts roam candidly.

My Major is Sports Management on a Pre-Law track. I am great at evaluating evidence and even better at persuasion based on my evidence. I feel like in every paper I write I do not have a hard time relating all support back to my thesis, similar to the way I will be expected to do at as a sports attorney. Above all my main interest is GOD. I incorporate God into every paper I write and that is how I have been able to make all of my papers shine.

While working though these assignments I have learned that I can incorporate anything that passions me into nearly topic. I have learned that passion and interest is what makes an essay “pop.” Rhetoric 101 taught me how I can link in other topics into my papers while staying focused at the theme at hand just to make that passion shine though. As I wrote my papers in Rhetoric 101 this semester I discovered that I am passionate about GOD. I discovered that GOD has shaped everything in my life, which is why I proudly chose to highlight the importance of GOD whenever I can in my essays. I learned that I am a passion based writer, meaning that if I am not passionate about the subject, my paper will turn out flat. Meaning that if I can see GOD in everything I do or discuss, that is my passion and that will not often be a missing element in any of my papers

I discovered how important organization is to me when it comes to writing. With that being said I write best when all of my core ideas are laid out and organization. I learned the importance of having a rough-rough draft in terms of organization. My rough-rough draft is where I do not think about organization at all, I just focus on how I feel about the topic. I focus on what claims I would like to make, and how each claim can be justified. My rough-rough draft is like the raw ground beef of paper. It is essential in a burger, but it just need a little shaping and to be cooked up.

In my e-portfolio I use pictures, videos, metaphors, and many more to demonstrate my transition from high school writing to college, rhetoric 101, writing. I hope these multi-media elements will help you understand exactly how I view myself as a writer and how I have developed as a writer all around.
