Title:
Foreshadowing Future LGBT2Q2I Research In Music Education and Advancing a Research Trajectory

Abstract:
Legal, social, and policy changes in support of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people are triggering educators and education researchers to address LGBTQ issues with a new consciousness of legitimacy and urgency (American Educational Research Association, 2015). Furthermore, a recent report and Capitol Hill briefing recommend that “…issues surrounding sexuality have large and significant or subcultural underpinnings…The diversity within LGBTQ communities need to be reflected in the research” (AERA, 2015). This absence of meaningful inquiry is also reflected in the lack of numerous government and private sector organizations research initiatives investigating the intersection of fine and performing arts experiences and the LGBTQ population. For instance, an examination of research conducted by national agencies and foundations including the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN), National Educational Association (NEA), and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), revealed that no research has involved fine and performing arts populations. The question still remains why national foundations and government agencies have not targeted arts populations and arts education as a subject for analysis.
