The purpose of this symposium is to encourage, promote, and disseminate discourse regarding the intersections of LGBTQ topics and music education. The symposium seeks to reveal how LGBTQ issues operate within music education in terms of research, curriculum, teacher preparation, and the musical lives and careers of LGBTQ music students and teachers. Topics of possible inquiry may be related to: intersecting identities and gender-sexual diversity; curriculum visibility; K-12 practitioner interests, needs and resources; role of GSAs in school settings; musical communities and gender-sexual diversity; spirituality, religion, music, and music education; ethics, policy, and legal issues related to gender-sexual diversity; feminisms and gender-sexual diverse; queer-pop music.

Submission Information

1. Juried Research Papers and Poster Session

Deadline for Proposals: For full consideration, proposals in abstract form (up to 350 words) are due, in English, by email, to Dr. Frank Diaz < diazf@umkc.edu> before December 15, 2015.

1. Authors who submit work for consideration to this symposium may include papers that have been presented at another conference or forum, or that have appeared in other publications. Research that has not appeared in other physical or virtual venues will be given preference in the selection process.
2. The research may be of any type, and critical reviews of literature will be considered. Articles must conform to one of the following style manuals: Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th edition, 2009), The Chicago Manual of Style (16th edition, 2010), or A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (Turabian, K.L. 16th edition, 2010). Authors may not mix styles within a single manuscript. Please write in clear, readable English, limit the use of passive voice, and avoid excess words.
3. Correspondence will be sent only to the submitter, and only by e-mail. Please send the manuscript from the e-mail address you wish to be used for correspondence. Submitters will be notified of receipt of the manuscript and the reviewers’ decision exclusively by e-mail.
4. The submitted abstract should contain no clues as to author identity or institutional affiliation. In the body of the e-mail, please include the following information: (a) the author’s or authors’ names, (b) current position(s) and institutional affiliation(s), (c) mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address (submitter only), (d) the report’s title, (e) the abstract, and (f) specifications of prior presentation
5. Criteria for acceptance: evidence of original research and sound construction/reporting; and relevance to an international audience in the field of music education.
6. Only electronic submissions will be considered.
7. A panel of qualified scholars will screen all abstracts for presentation at the symposium.
8. Authors of symposium papers will be notified of the reviewers’ decision no later than February 1, 2016

Publication Policy for Juried Research Papers

1. Abstracts of papers accepted for presentation at the symposium will be made available indefinitely on an archival website maintained by the Council for Research in Music Education. By agreeing to present their paper at the symposium, authors of papers give their permission to have their abstracts archived.
2. The Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education will publish a special issue dedicated to papers related to the Symposium. Papers to be considered for publication will be sent for review and should be submitted electronically to the journal (Click Here).The deadline for submitting to the special issue is June 15, 2016.
3. Authors of papers accepted for presentation at the Symposium may submit their work to the Bulletin of the Council of Research in Music Education for review for publication in an issue of the Bulletin dedicated to the symposium. Research Under Construction Session

In response to numerous requests, we are happy now to invite authors to submit an application for a session designed for participants to share questions and ideas for LGBTQ-related scholarly inquiry at any stage of development, from “I am wondering about this idea as a research study,” to “I have a research question, but am not sure how to conduct a study about it.”

Application. Submit a description of 300 words or less. On the title page, include the author’s name, institutional affiliation (if applicable), email, mailing address, and that the proposal is for the Under-Construction Session. Please email to Dr. Frank Diaz <diazf@umkc.edu>.
