Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship for summer 2024

Undergraduate and graduate students studying less commonly taught languages (any language other than French, German, and Spanish) are encouraged to apply for a Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship for summer 2024 and/or academic year 2024-25. Applicants need to be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. To learn more, attend one of the upcoming info sessions. There will be a Zoom info session on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 4 P.M. (register here) and an in-person info session on Monday, Dec. 4 at 4 P.M. in Gregory Hall 205 (no registration required).

How much are the tuition support and stipend amounts?

  • Undergraduate academic year FLAS fellows receive $10,000 towards tuition and a $5,000 stipend.
  • Graduate academic year FLAS fellows receive a tuition waiver or $18,000 towards tuition (depending on the program) and a $20,000 stipend.
  • Summer FLAS fellows (both undergraduate and graduate) receive $5,000 towards tuition and fees and a $3,500 stipend.

What do I need to apply?

First, you will need to decide which language you would like to apply for. Please note that undergraduate applicants are required to have studied the language for at least one year by the time their fellowship period starts. For example, if you are currently taking first-year Arabic, you are eligible to apply now for a summer 2024 or academic-year 2024-25 FLAS to study second-year Arabic. Graduate students may apply for FLAS to study a language at the first-year level. The application requires a brief statement of purpose, two recommendation letters, and a transcript, in addition to an application form, which will be available starting Nov. 28.

When is the application due?

Applications are due Friday, January 26, 2024.

What is required from FLAS fellows?

Academic year FLAS fellows are required to be enrolled full-time and to take a language course and an area studies course each semester. Summer FLAS fellows are required to enroll in a language program that provides the equivalent of one year of language study.

Can I use FLAS to study abroad?
