Fair Use Lessons

These lessons are meant for students interested in learning more about fair use.

There are four different modules, but two of them go hand-in-hand: the module on controlled digital lending and the module on the HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service ideally are discussed jointly. These two modules both discuss controlled digital lending, which is a method of digitally lending older books on a one-to-one basis relying on fair use.

The other modules stand alone. One is about the Circular 21 Guidelines and the erroneous 10% “rule” that is often mistakenly cited as a fair use guideline. The other is a stand alone lesson about how fair use enables librarians to engage in storytime online.
