Bat ticks are widespread in the United States. The species Carios kelleyi is the one most commonly associated with bat roosts in human-built structures in the Midwest. These soft-bodied ticks feed on bats but will use another host if needed. When bats are excluded from homes, these parasites might get left behind. Without their preferred host, they may feed on humans and have the potential to cause infection.
