During this meeting, Pier Alberto Merli, Rome Resident Director, and Sonia Massari, Rome Academic and Programs Director, will be on-hand to share information about the current Spring semester program in Rome and to discuss the new programs being developed for Summer and Fall 2015.

We have invited renowned food studies scholar and international journalist Fabio Parasecoli to speak about the key themes of globalization of food and cultural identity that underline the academic inquiries of the new Summer and Fall study abroad programs at the Illinois Center in Rome.  

The new Summer and Fall Programs in Rome use interdisciplinary approaches to critical food studies, and through the curriculum and excursions throughout Italy, address issues of sustainability, food security, economic trade, national nutritional policies, business, marketing, communication, cultural heritage, and tourism.  The Summer program will also offer optional internships.

ACES Education Abroad Info Sessions Next Week

Please share the details for two ACES Education Abroad information sessions with your students:
ACES in Botswana and Tanzania – Tuesday, October 7 from 5:00 – 6:00pm in 313 Mumford Hall
Learn about exciting opportunities to study wildlife management and conservation issues in Botswana or Tanzania! Both locations offer field research opportunities! Spots are still available for a winter break 2014-2015 program: Communities & Wildlife Conservation Research in Botswana (Application Deadline: November 1, 2014)
ACES in France at Purpan – Wednesday, October 8 from 4:00 – 5:00pm in the Morgan Caterpillar Room of the ACES Library
Hannah, a Crop Sciences student and Purpan returnee, will share what it was like to study at Purpan and live in France. The summer program at Purpan gives students the opportunity to study French agricultural production and intern on a French farm.

The Study Abroad Office will be hosting a UK Study Abroad Fair this Thursday, October 2.  Please pass the following message along to your students to help us promote this event:

The Study Abroad Office is holding a UK Study Abroad Fair on Thursday, October 2 from 3-5 PM in room 101 of the International Studies Building.  Even if you’re just beginning to consider study abroad, stop by to get more information on your program options, including the following featured programs:

Study Abroad Info Session TODAY, September 25

We’re holding a study abroad information session today that focuses on programs in the UK and Ireland and on the British Exchange Program.  Although it’s aimed primarily at English department majors, any student who’s interested in BEP study abroad options could benefit.  Please share this with your advisees, and let them know they’d be very welcome to attend.  We’ll have students on hand who have studied abroad to answer questions and share tips.

We were able to extend the deadlines on three of our Winter Break Faculty-Led programs to accommodate more students. These are great options for students who don’t have time in their schedule for a full semester, need automatic Illinois course credit, or who would prefer more support on-site.

“Students in this course will study and experience the cultural and linguistic diversities of India and understand how a
multicultural and multilingual India is being impacted by globalization, both economic and cultural. The course will
enable students to experience the three distinct realities of India – rural/tribal, urban, and metropolitan. While in
India, students will get opportunities to interact with local students, people, officials, and professionals from diverse
fields. Students interested in or pursuing research on specific topics related to the culture and languages of India will be
encouraged to focus on their chosen interest or research in their required paper and poster for this course.”
