Upcoming Pre-Law Events

Please help us share details about these upcoming Pre-Law programs, which are open to all students. We are hosting a special networking event on November 9 that should be of interest to many students.

Applying to Law School Workshop: Nov.2 at 4:00 in 514 Illini Union Bookstore Building. This workshop will provide an extensive overview of the application process, including: Understanding the Credential Assembly Service (including a demo), letters of recommendation, transcripts, and the LSAC report that law schools receive. It will also cover how to develop a law school application strategy and share tips to maximize admission and aid in the law school application process. All of your questions about the law school application process will be addressed! No registration is necessary.

Pre-Law 101: Nov. 4 at 3:00 in 514 Illini Union Bookstore Building. This workshop is for any Illinois student who is new to pre-law. It will cover: What it means to be a pre-law student at Illinois; the profile of a successful law school applicant; building a pre-law resume during undergraduate years; and what helpful resources exist on campus. Bring all of your pre-law questions! This workshop is primarily aimed at first year students but all students are welcome. Please register here to ensure enough seating and materials for everyone. This is the last Pre-Law 101 session of the fall semester.

The Real Deal: Lawyers Share the Inside View of the Legal Profession. Nov. 9 at 5:00 in 514 Illini Union Bookstore Building. The best way to learn about the legal profession is to talk to lawyers! What is it really like to argue a case before a jury? What skills does it take to make partner or own your own law firm? How can you find success in the legal profession? Network with retired area lawyers representing a variety of legal careers to find out! Ask questions about what it’s really like to practice law and get insight into what skills you can build now to prepare for a successful legal career! This is a valuable chance to talk to people who can share perspectives on their decades-long successful legal careers. No registration is necessary. Click here for speaker bios.

Perfecting Your Personal Statement & Resume for Law School: Nov. 10 at 4:00 in 514 Illini Union Bookstore Building. This is the final personal statement workshop of the fall semester. The personal statement and resume are a law school applicant’s opportunity to tell a school all about yourself and why you will make a great addition to their class. Students consistently say that this is the hardest part of the application, so this workshop was developed to provide some insight. It will cover: What the personal statement is; how to begin writing it; what to include and exclude; writing separate addenda; how the personal statement and resume should work together; and an overview of the law school resume. Please click on the link to register so that we can ensure enough seating and materials for everyone.

Thank you for helping us reach all interested students. All of our programming can be found on our event calendar here.

Pre-Law events and resources for fall

Pre-Law Advising Services has a full calendar of events for this fall. Here are a few highlights to share with interested students. All students are welcome to attend our events!

Pre-Law 101: Sept. 8, Oct. 12, Nov. 4

This workshop is for any Illinois student who is new to pre-law. It will cover: What it means to be a pre-law student at Illinois; the profile of a successful law school applicant; building a pre-law resume during undergraduate years; and what helpful resources exist on campus. This workshop is primarily aimed at first year students but all students are welcome. Please visit the Pre-Law Event Calendar and RSVP to ensure enough seating and materials for everyone. First year students should attend a Pre-Law 101 prior to setting up an individual Pre-Law Advising appointment. Practice LSAT: Sept. 18, 8:30 am – 12:30 pm

Pre-Law Advising Services is pleased to present the opportunity for students to take a full length practice LSAT under timed classroom conditions! This is a great opportunity for students new to the LSAT to get a baseline score, or for October or December LSAT takers to try out their skills in a classroom setting. This is a full length, actual, previously administered LSAT exam which will be proctored in a realistic classroom setting. Seating is limited; please register here.

Personal Statement Workshops: Sept. 21, Oct. 8, Nov. 10

Students consistently tell us that this is the hardest part of the application, so we have developed this workshop to provide some insight. We will cover: What the personal statement is; how to begin writing it; what to include and exclude; writing separate addenda; how the personal statement and resume should work together; and an overview of the law school resume.

Law School Fair: October 6, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm in the Illini Union

It’s the biggest pre-law event of the year! Over 120 law schools visit campus to meet with prospective students. English Alumni Career Panel TODAY, Oct 22

We’d appreciate it if you could remind interested students that the English Department Alumni Career Panel will take place TODAY, Oct 22.  We welcome students from all majors at this event!

Wednesday, October 22
5:00 – 6:30 p.m.
EB 108
Hearty refreshments provided

The event will feature English department alums who want to talk about how to make the best possible use of a humanities degree.  Between them they have a remarkable amount and range of professional experience in fields such as human resources, marketing, technology, publishing, event planning, higher education administration, librarianship, and more.  Some are seasoned professionals, some more recent graduates, but all are reaping the benefits of an undergraduate degree in English (and the skills associated with it).
