INFO 490: Intro to Data Science

Please make your students aware of this new informatics course being offered online this summer! This class counts as one of the upper level electives for the INFO minor and is suitable for anyone (humanities and social sciences to STEM disciplines) who wants actual hand-on experience learning how to work with, and analyze large datasets.  It might be especially useful for students who are planning on pursuing graduate school (or those currently in Masters programs).

SUMMER II JUNE 16 – AUGUST 7

Introduction to Data Science will introduce students to the tools and technologies that are necessary to work with large data. Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to understand the basic concepts of data science from data acquisition through data understanding. Students will learn how to work at a Unix prompt and how to use the Python programming language to process, visualize, persist, model, and mine large data sets. Students MUST have access to a computer on which they can install software (in particular the virtual machine software). No prerequisites other than a desire to work with data!
