Course Description:
Discovery Course 3 Credit Hours. This course introduces students to the exciting 1960s decade–from the U.S.-Soviet space race and Vietnam war protests to the British invasion in music and popular culture, counter culture (Hippies, Flower Children, Yippies, Diggers, Merry Pranksters) of the decades socio-political-historical-educational times! Course participants will reflect on a generation of leaders (John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Robert Kennedy), civil rights and other social movement activists who struggled for racial, gender, and class equality (Betty Friedan, Martin Luther King, Jr., Cesar Chavez, Delores Huerta, Ella Baker, Septima Clark, Mario Savio), ideas, events, and issues (social, educational, political), many of which were reflected by the songs, music, musicians (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Beach Boys, Supremes, Temptations, Mamas and Papas, etc), rock festivals, poetry, poets, literature, art, television, movies, fashions, fads, and social justice movements, esp. student/youth, free speech, Vietnam/anti-war protests, peace, women’s/feminist, African American, Chicano-a/Latino-a, Asian American, and Native American civil rights struggles as well as environmental and alternative movements.
