Tutoring in Foreign Languages

NOTE: Remember, I do not set up tutoring. I simply provide you with ways to access opportunities. It is your responsibility to follow through and complete the required 50 hours.

Hello my foreign language students!  The opportunities below are especially useful for students with an interest in tutoring in a foreign language.  For those students who plan to apply to the Bachelor of Arts in the Teaching of a Foreign Language, you will want to gear your 50 hours of tutoring specifically to tutoring in your language.

Campus Middle School for Girls

East Central Illinois Refugee Mutual Assistance Center

S.O.A.R.

1.  Campus Middle School for Girls

Located on campus in the basement of the Wesley Foundation on the corner of Green and Goodwin

If you are interested in tutoring Spanish, email Carmelita Nussbaum at carmelita@campusms.org and she will make sure that your schedules mesh with hers.  Then you will meet with the Spanish instructor to get oriented! You will need a background check and fingerprinting.

For students interested in Spanish teaching, this is a great opportunity to get very involved with students and it is in a very convenient location right on campus!

2. East Central Illinois Refugee Mutual Assistance Center in Urbana – only for students interested in the BAT, not the minor

The Tutoring Program matches volunteers with adult and K-12 refugee students for tutoring and activities on Saturday mornings.  The first day of the ECIRMAC tutoring program will be Saturday, September 8th.

They will hold Saturday tutoring sessions and orientations from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the basement of St. Matthew Lutheran Church at 2200 S. Philo Road, Urbana.

In addition, prospective tutors should be aware that we will hold two approximately 45-minute-long orientation/training sessions, one immediately following the program on Sept. 8th and one following the program on Sept. 15th.  It is mandatory for prospective tutors to attend one of these two sessions and to fill out an application form that we’ll hand out.  Unlike last year, we are now requiring our tutors to commit to working with us on a regular weekly basis throughout the entire semester (no more than one unexcused absence allowed, except under extenuating circumstances).

As before, while just about all of our students do speak English, we will likely have a number of Congolese students who are more comfortable using French.  Furthermore, most (if not all) of our students come from families who speak a language other than English at home.  Therefore, this is a particularly relevant tutoring opportunity for UIUC students who are interested in teaching ESL or foreign languages.

Interested students should contact Emily Felker at emilyfelker@gmail.com.

Volunteers tutors are asked to commit one day a week for the duration of the semester to work individually with a Spanish-speaking child and should be available from 2:45-4:15 on the day(s) they tutor. Tutors may also volunteer during the school day in a bilingual classroom at Garden Hills.
