Additional Ways to Sign up for Tutoring

NOTE: Remember, I do not set up tutoring. I simply provide you with ways to access opportunities. It is your responsibility to follow through and complete the required 50 hours.

If none of the previously sent opportunities work for you, here is information about three final avenues to tutoring for Fall Semester.

1. Vis-à-vis: You can sign up to tutor middle school or high school students  in the Champaign and Urbana area  through Vis-a-Vis by dropping by their office on the first floor of the YMCA/YWCA on Wright St across from Lincoln Hall.

2. Volunteer Illini Projects:  Their office is 268 Illini Union, 1401 West Green Street, Urbana, IL 61801. Drop by to check on tutoring opportunities  in the Champaign-Urbana area.

NOTE: Pre-teaching students: Only middle school or high school tutoring will meet your required hours.

 3.    Math 199 FTM section:    ****Highly Recommended option for Math teaching students only:  This is a class specifically designed to get your 25+ tutoring hours per semester along with teaching you math teaching methods in a 1 credit hour class.  This is the recommended option for signing up for tutoring for you.  If for some reason you cannot get into this class, you can choose one of the options above or found in Parts 2-4 of this email chain.

LAS/Education will accept tutoring completed through Math 199 FTM tutoring or America Reads/America Counts middle school tutoring. If you have registered for Math 199 FTM (must be planning to major in math) for Fall 2012, you should be able to complete at least 25 hours of tutoring this Spring (Note: Math 199 FTM students must attend an Urbana High School Tutoring Orientation session—see earlier e-mail about Urbana High School for date and location.) To work with America Reads/America Counts, you need to have already received information about this opportunity from the Financial Aid Office as this is a College Work/Study Program based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA.

I wish you well with your Fall tutoring experiences. Once you have made your choice from the opportunities I have provided, I strongly recommend that you get your tutoring applications in ASAP.  Don’t forget to visit http://education.illinois.edu/tutoring/schools for access to the applications for the various schools.
