Tutoring at Champaign Middle and High Schools

NOTE:  Remember, I do not set up tutoring. I simply provide you with ways to access opportunities. It is your responsibility to follow through and complete the required 50 hours.

Please go to http://education.illinois.edu/tutoring/schools to find Champaign Middle and High School information such as applications for tutoring along with other very important information.

Steps toward setting up tutoring in Champaign:

1)  Figure out where you want to tutor: Go to www.champaignschools.org and click on schools.  Remember that only those intending to teach in foreign languages can look at the elementary school options.  Everyone else should only look into either the middle schools or high schools for tutoring opportunities.

*Remember to start thinking like a teacher here.  Think about places where you will enjoy the tutoring as well as have an experience that can stretch you professionally. Also think about your transportation abilities and limitations when you select a school.

2) Criminal Background Check:  You have to fill out the attached criminal background check form.  You will need to sign it and mail it to:

Mellon Building

703 S. New

Champaign, IL 61820

(Note: Any student who had a background check for Champaign last year does not need to complete another one this year.)

3) Volunteer application: You need to fill out the attached volunteer application and submit it via email to the school coordinator where you will be volunteering.  The list of Champaign coordinators is in the third attachment.

4) Attend a volunteer training: Lauren Smith, the Champaign High Schools Tutoring Coordinator, will be holding volunteer training.  You must attend one of the volunteer trainings for UIUC students.  The times below are for the Champaign high schools, Centennial and Central.  The middle schools have not yet set up tutoring training yet.
