Written in beautiful verse format, this story retells a portion of the Arthurian legend from the point of view of seventeen year old Elaine.  Beginning with the young Queen Gwynivere’s arrival at camp, life changes for young Elaine.  Through her eyes, readers meet legendary characters and learn about the tragic woes that befall them.  Readers who appreciated Dalkey’s willingness to rewrite Arthurian legend will respect Sandell’s willingness to do the same.

Springer, Nancy.  I am Morgan le Fay:  A Tale from Camelot.  New York:  Philomel Books, 2001.  Print.
This book follows the life of its namesake Morgan le Fay, the older half-sister of King Arthur.  Through her eyes readers discover what made her into the well-known enchantress determined to bring down her brother, the king, as well as her connection to the faerie world.  This book will appeal to those whom enjoy reading the back story of non-central characters in the Arthurian legend – the Lady of the Lake in the Water Trilogy and now Morgan in I am Morgan le Fay.

Yolen, Jane.  Sword of the Rightful King.  San Diego, CA:  Harcourt, 2003.  Print.
While traditional Arthurian legend has Arthur pulling the sword from the stone to become king, in this retelling, the act is simply a ruse by the wizard Merlinnus intended to further cement Arthur’s right to rule and his connection to the people.  However, things do not go according to plan when someone unexpected pulls the sword from the stone.  Readers who liked reading a new take on Arthurian legend in the Water Trilogy, will delight in Yolen’s fresh approach to King Arthur’s court.
