Project-based Learning

PURPOSE

To provide students with real-world experiences by engaging them in meaningful projects.

DESCRIPTION

Students work on an extended project (e.g., one week; one semester) that presents a complex question or real-world design problem.

UNDERLYING EDUCATIONAL THEORIES

project-based learning, active learning, engagement

PEDAGOGICAL BENEFITS

  • Students build a problem-solving skillset that can better prepare them for the demands of the workplace.
  • Project-based learning designs can support critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration.
  • Extended projects can motivate students to engage more deeply in, and take command of, their learning, as well as assist them in marking milestones throughout their learning journey.
  • Project-based learning supports students in continually learning, both inside and outside the classroom, as well as fosters autonomous learning skills.
  • Project-based learning allows students to engage in real-world endeavors that are meaningful to them.

STRATEGIES FOR IMPLEMENTATION

  1. Seek out project areas that are suitable for your content. Projects may be sponsored by companies, foundations, partners, etc. depending on the scope. Plan in advance and identify outlets suitable for students.
  2. Consider whether projects will require funding. Consider duration and assessment of projects.
  3. Consider whether projects will be individual or team-based (PBL is typically implemented in collaborative groups, but can be designed for various population sizes).
  4. In selecting and/or designing projects, consider how open-ended the question or prompt will be. Note that more open-ended projects are typically assessed using a rubric designed for the purpose.
  5. Consider deliverables. Will students present their projects to the class in person? Will they have a final product or report?
