Reflection of Essay #3

The goal of this essay was to pick an exigent topic and make an argument about it using research. I was very happy to find out that I did very well on this essay. I received a 92 out of 100. That correlates to an A-. With that being said, I still had some revisions I needed to make to make the paper as strong as possible. I had a couple small edits as well as some larger edits. Professor Mary advised me to fix my opening sentence because it seemed exaggerated. I went back and made the sentence a little less extreme. I tend to struggle a lot with when to use affects/effects. I had to make a switch from affects to effects. I also needed to add some commas throughout my paper to avoid run-ons. One major edit I had to make was being less passive/wordy. In a couple spots of my paper, I was caught being passive/wordy, so I went back and made those areas flow better with less words. The biggest issue of my paper was that my opinion seemed unknown until the last paragraph. The paper really only talked about the source’s opinions and lacked some of my analysis. I went back and added sentences throughout my paper to give readers a sneak peek of my opinion until I talked about it in the final paragraph. This paper taught me more than any other assignment. I’ve become more familiar with the research process, citing, and analyzing. I not only learned a lot about media’s impact on gun violence but learned a lot about writing in general.
