Rita Peng’s New Publication Accepted!

Congratulations to Rita, our PhD student, on her first publication, “Determining the Effects of Targeted High-Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Reducing Post-Stroke Upper Limb Motor Impairments – A Randomized Cross-Over Study“, as well as to our new team at UIUC and Carle!

This randomized, double-blinded crossover study investigates the effects of targeted high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on upper extremity motor recovery in post-acute stroke patients, aiming to optimize motor function by modulating cortical excitability and spasticity through anodal, cathodal, and bilateral stimulation protocols. The study could advance understanding of stroke recovery mechanisms and refine tDCS as a therapeutic intervention.

Neural mechanism and the experimental design in this study:

a. The two main motor areas involved in stroke recovery: the primary motor cortex and the dorsal premotor area. 
b. Motor descending pathways in stroke recovery. 
c. The first intervention involves stimulating the iM1 area using anodal stimulation. 
d. The second intervention involves stimulating the cPMd using cathodal stimulation. 
e. The third intervention combines anodal stimulation of the iM1 area and cathodal stimulation of the cPMd. 
f. The sham condition without any stimulation intervention
