Grieving, ChatGPT, and Job Hunting: A Graduate Student’s Journey Towards Graduation

Greetings everyone! I am Jun Liu, a graduate student in Information Management and one of the graduate ambassadors for iSchool. As graduation day draws closer, I wanted to share my experiences with you in my second blog of the graduation season. The past month has been a challenging one for me, but I am grateful for the support I received from my family and friends.

Grieving the Loss of My Grandmother

In late March, my grandmother passed away. I immediately flew back to China when my mother informed me that my grandmother had suffered a stroke and was hospitalized. Despite being elderly and in poor health, my grandmother miraculously woke up from her coma the day after my arrival. We had a meal together, held hands, and shared conversations. Unfortunately, the following day, my grandmother fell into a coma once more and did not wake up again.

Accepting the sudden loss of my grandmother was tough. It felt like a part of me was missing, but every time I closed my eyes, I could see her smiling and nagging at me. I know that she will always be in my heart.

ChatGPT and AIGC

In my previous blog, I mentioned my fascination with ChatGPT. It has now become a vital tool in my daily workflow. When programming, ChatGPT is always open alongside the IDE. For most programming languages or function queries, I consult ChatGPT and debug and test my code based on the sample it provides. Additionally, when writing emails or other documents, ChatGPT assists me in proofreading and polishing. I recently subscribed to ChatGPT Plus to access the most advanced GPT-4 model. I believe that ChatGPT will create new markets and business models, and companies hiring prompt engineers on Handshake are opportunities worth considering.

Job Hunting

I submitted over 20 resumes this month and received interviews from two companies. One is a private equity fund that focuses on advanced technologies like AR/VR, artificial intelligence, and autonomous driving. The other is an AI company with expertise in machine vision, natural language processing, and large-scale models. Both interviewers expressed interest in my previous AI consulting experience. I even received a verbal offer from the AI company, but I’m still submitting resumes and attending interviews to have more options.

Preparing for Graduation

I received an invitation to the graduation ceremony on May 13th and booked a package for the graduation gown through Herff Jones. I regret not attending my undergraduate graduation ceremony, so I’m excited to attend my own this time around!
