Madelyn Rose Sanfilippo

Madelyn Rose Sanfilippo is an assistant professor in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research empirically explores governance of sociotechnical systems, as well as outcomes, inequality, and consequences within these systems. Using mixed-methods, including computational social science approaches and institutional analysis, she addresses research questions about: participation in and legitimacy of sociotechnical governance; social justice issues associated with sociotechnical governance; privacy in sociotechnical systems; and differences between policies or regulations and sociotechnical practice. Her work practically supports decision-making in, management of, and participation in a diverse public sphere.

Postdoctoral Researchers

Sang Hoo Oh is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He defended his dissertation at Florida State University on The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Future Workforce in 2023. His interests focus on AI and the economy, information policy, and AI and data ethics.

Graduate Student Researchers

Kyra Milan Abrams is an Informatics PhD student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests are data privacy and its connection with digital literacy. She is specifically interested in how data autonomy can be developed through the perspective of marginalized communities. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in interdisciplinary studies from the University of California-Berkeley.
Zak Kilhoffer is a PhD student in Information Sciences at UIUC. His research focuses on digital (labor) platforms and marketplaces, rating and reputation systems, and algorithmic management and transparency. He is co-advised by Dr. Yang Wang.
Smirity Kaushik is a PhD Candidate, co-advised by Dr. Yang Wang. She works in HCI and User Experience Research domain in social computing systems research, focusing on privacy policies and usable privacy and security. I am particularly interested in exploring user-centered privacy research ideas to resolve socio-technical challenges at the intersection of privacy, policy, and HCI.
Alexis Tharp is a PhD student in Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests center on infrastructure studies and social justice. She is particularly interested in algorithms and their impacts on the larger sociotechnical systems in which they are situated.
Eryclis Rodrigues Bezerra Silva is a PhD student in Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is interested in the intersection of law and technology. His research has variously addressed LLMs and copyright, open source AI and trade secrets, and AI regulation.
Zhixuan (Kyrie) Zhou is a PhD student in Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is co-advised by Dr. Ted Underwood. His research interests are broadly in human-computer interaction (HCI) and AI ethics/governance. He is particularly passionate about understanding gender bias in AI (e.g., ChatGPT) and other corpora (e.g., fairy tales), as well as developing education games and tools to equip people with awareness. He has also conducted extensive user research to understand emerging sociotechnical systems, especially social/streaming media and blockchain/Web3.
