In context..
Typically a granting agency will require that a researcher retain their data for a given period of time (often up to three years). A granting agency may also require you to explain how you will back up your research data. Aside from the requirements of the granting agency, proper data storage and backups means that your data will be locatable and replicable for both your own work, and for other researchers. Diligence in storage and backups often lead to better researcher discoverability and higher research metric scores.

At a glance..

Data storage refers to preserving your data files in a secure location so as to be able to easily access that data. Data backup refers to preserving additional copies of your data in a separate physical location.

In context, a data storage systems will often provide a mirroring service in which data is written simultaneously to two hard-drives. That said, a backup preserves the older copies of your data so you can restore your data to an earlier revision in case of an emergency. A proper backup will also be located physically separate from the original. This will ensure retention in case of fire, thet, or another unforeseen catastrophe.
